I wish

I really wish our fanbase was more dedicated to the team rather than to the coach. As I say this I'm imagining fans of the raiders and 49'ers and celtics etc. Die hard fans that support their team in season no matter what! I have never in all of my life around the game seen someone actively route for "their" team to lose. It's pathetic as a fan, and disrespectful to the team and university alike. Everyone's usually down after a loss and I get that, but I don't expect to come to a fan site and read from someone who takes such joy in it. I would go on to an aggie or red raider board for that. But to all of the fans (regardless of your feelings on the coach) that stayed positive and always wanted the best for this season I thank you for having someone one to chat and share my opinions with

Pathetic and disrepectful to the University we love is tolerating mediocrity that you and the other sunshine pumpers embrace. You of all people continue to defend and provide additional excuses on why Texas should keep the "only best coach in the entire world." Please.

Texas deserves better. The players deserve better. I will NOT support a coach who gets paid a million dollars and embarasses the University let alone her credibility with output we've seen year in and year out since 2007.

You will not fit a square peg in a round hole! tsk

You've been missing the point pretty often over the course of your appearance on this fan board.

Another groundhog day is coming...

Thanks for your presence on the board UTFAN. I appreciate your calm and balanced perspective, along with Babhorn, Outlookdude and many other.

The players chose to play at UT and chose to play for Gail specifically. They are in this together. I choose to support the players and the coaches year in and year out. I love the wins and feel bad and at times frustrated with the losses, but I am an avowed sunshine pumper wearing orange tinted glasses. No amount of 'logic' or vitriol from someone else is going to convince me to cheer against the team (team = coaches and players).

I have no say on the choice of coaches, recruits, play calling or practices. None of the money I put towards tuition at UT, foundation donations, or ticket purchases gives me the right or responsibility to have a say in the choice of coaches, recruits, play calling or practices. My ticket purchases give me the right to show up and watch in person.

Some fans have left since Gail got here. Some have started to attend games since she got here. To each his own. I don't understand why people would continue to focus on a hobby that brings them anger, but so be it.

I love watching women's college basketball, love watching the Longhorns and will continue to pump sunshine every year, every game...just as others will continue to spew negativity.

Hopefully, those of you who do feel the need to call for a change in the coaching staff have taken your request directly to the decision-makers and aren't just hoping that ranting anonymously on a message board is the best way to influence change.

She by far is not in the minority. The minority are you and your fellow uneducated aggie fans who think a change at the helm would automatically right the ship. Someone commented on the AAS story and said that we should hire Cathy Self-Morgan, with out even realizing that Cathy gave GG a resounding stamp of approval by sending one of her best athlete's to be a part of her program. I talked to Cathy at the tournament last week and we talked about the program and she shared the same opinions as I and many other alumni turned HS coaches. GG has worked wonders in improving her image with coaches around the state so her in state recruiting will improve dramatically. And as someone who views Cathy as the measuring stick for all HS coaches and someone who boasts a resounding (3-9) record against her it had a tremendous impact on me and my thoughts on the state of the program.

Also on another side note, got a chance to speak to Recee Caldwell's father at the A&m game and he said that UT was leading the pack to get his daughter. Sounds like yet another top recruit.

Great news to hear on the recruiting and relationship with coaches front. However, it is perfectly reasonable for people to question whether we have the right person in place to sail this ship. Especially when the current captain has of yet been unable to demonstrate she has the capability of developing CONSISTENT players with strong basketball fundamentals and players capable of the leadership necessary to compete in this league. Rebuilding this trainwreck is going to take a number of years for Goestenkors the same as for a new coach. I am questioning whether or not she can even do it because of the environment of inconsistency, existing prior to her arrival, that continues to exist. If you aren't making strides EACH YEAR to change that how do you become a successful, winning program?

Don't stoop to his level. Ignore him, the rest of us do. He has no real life and the only way he gets his thrills is by being an internet bully and kicking his dog. While I may not be a fan of the coach, I root for the team wearing Burnt Orange with Texas stitched across the top in all sports.

You are all welcome here, just ignore the internet bullies, put yourself in there shoes, they live a miserable life.

I actually don’t worry about fundamentals, at least as a measure of a D1 coach. Players should learn to dribble the basketball, shoot free throws and layups before they get to college. If they still have problems with any of those they should have the initiative to work on them away from team practice. A D1 coach should not have to use time to teach fundamentals.

The type of leader a person will become as a college senior is pretty much a crap shoot when you are evaluating them as sophomores in high school. Everyone changes tremendously during those years.

That doesn’t make any leadership or fundamentals issues any less frustrating. But, I’m not sure that the record of this Texas team has anything to do with leadership or fundamentals. I’m with you on consistency. I’ve been talking about consistency for a few years now. I’m not going to rehash that here again. But I absolutely agree that what allows teams to be great is consistency, and that this team has clearly lacked that quality.

I might be the only one, but I actually feel better about this program now than I did at the beginning of the season. I’m not close to being a basketball coach, but I do watch pretty closely and watch things other than just the overall record. When the Texas football program started to slide the initial signs were pretty subtle. In the same way progress can be just as subtle. It doesn’t always jump up and slap you in the face. I certainly understand why some people question GG being the head coach. Hell, I’ve had questions at times. I respect that opinion. And, I might be completely wrong. But, as the season winds down I think I have seen some of those subtle signs of progress.

I think the level of effort has become more consistent. I think this this team has learned how to fight until the end. I think the expectations of the players on the team have become higher. I think there is more internal frustration among the players that they haven’t achieved more. I think a huge part of becoming consistent is a mental issue. While these might sound like small things, or things that should be taken for granted, I believe they represent a major shift in the mindset of the program. I believe they are the things that come before consistency. I would have liked to see them two years ago. But, they are no less significant or important now.

I also see a trend of more highly recruited players committed to Texas. I won’t like them or support them any more than the ones we have had around for years. But consistency in recruiting and having a bench full of talented players is also important. One very good player isn’t going to do it. One very good class isn’t going to do it. We need consistent classes loaded with the best talent available. Running off one of the most successful coaches in WCBB history after a sort stay, much less replacing her with a HS coach as some would suggest, would not help recruiting.

I’m not here guaranteeing that Coach G is going to get Texas to an elite level. I’ve been wrong plenty of times before. I’m just saying that I think I see some progress and I’m excited about that and what I think it means for the future.

Let me define fundamentals as I meant it. I'm not talking about dribbling, shooting a free throw and making a layup. These are division 1 athletes and if they don't know how to do those things they should never set foot on the campus. I'm talking about being sound enough in the fundamentals to allow you to execute an offense without turning the ball over. This team allows themselves to get too frustrated too easily and start making stupid play after stupid play. I'm talking about if the biggest play in your offense is the pick and roll....then when you are the 5'10" guard and the 6'4" post is screening and you get a switch from the defensive players and your 5'10" or shorter player is now guarding 6'4", then you need to move heaven and earth to get the ball passed into the post for an easy bucket. I can't tell you how many times I saw this switch happen over the course of our season and our 5'10" guard proceeded to dribble the ball over to the other side of the court. Maybe instead of fundamentals I"m looking for a higher basketball IQ and that is coaching. If you want to continue to get giddy over kernels of improvement in a trainwreck good for you. As someone else on this board said, why do you have a hobby that causes you so much upset. EXACTLY! My A-Ha moment, I think I'll join the MAJORITY and no longer be a season ticket holder. I think there are better things to do like watch paint dry.

Sticks and stones utfann. We'll see if your beloved goestenkors "turns" the corner again. Your so called conversations with other coaches is humorous at best. Recruits considering Texas with goestenkors at the helm are in for a elite wannabe program.

I didn’t mean to imply that I am giddy having seen some progress. I don’t get giddy very often about anything, and I don’t get upset quickly either. I’m actually kind of boring.

And, I’m not trying to argue about our different perceptions of the team. I fine with agreeing to disagree.

I do agree that this team has not always handled adversity well. That isn’t about a lack of effort, or lack of caring. It’s about how effectively they channel that energy. Does it get to the court as focus and determination, or does it result in trying to do too much, rushing shots, and getting away from your game plan. Do you play with determination and confidence, or do you play with fear of losing and out of desperation.

The answer is going to be a little different for each individual, and not always the same from game to game. Most of the time it is going to vary somewhere between the extremes. But, this is getting back to the issue of consistency. The idea is to have the team move toward the determination and confidence extreme and stay there for 40 minutes every game.

I see a team that has played very well at times, so I know they know how to do that. I know the talent and plan are there. But a coach can’t tell a team to be more or less emotional, to worry less, to be more confident, to have better team chemistry and trust each other more. Those are mental issues that each player has to work through on their own. It can be frustrating to watch when they struggle with those issues.

It is even more frustrating for them. Coaches and fans can’t do much other than be supportive with those types of issues. What they are trying to overcome are mental issues that some adults never conquer. I watch people every day in professional lives that are held back by the same things. Sports provide a way to play a game and learn to better deal with challenges and adversity. I want them all to be successful. I want them to win every game. I want that now. But, me sticking with them is a lot easier than what they are trying to accomplish.

That’s just me. I don’t think it’s right or wrong. It’s just how I feel. People disagree with me all the time about things that are more important than basketball. Often they are right. If you don’t enjoy the sport, the game, or the program any more it is probably in your best interest to move on. I can’t imagine ever getting that upset over a game, but like I said, I’m kind of boring.
