I wish the Spurs had taken Chalmers

This Hill guy actually seems to be a fairly good player, but unless he becomes a long-term backup PG, I don't see how he helps San Antonio much. The Spurs have plenty of good shooters, but once it got down to the 4th quarter, everyone was hesitant. Nobody had the confidence to take the big outside shot and there wasn't one clutch guy (like Kerr or Horry used to be) where he takes the shot late in the game and everyone thinks - and more importantly, the shooter seems to think - "this one's definitely going in." For that reason, I would have much rather seen them take Chalmers.

I agree, although I've never seen Hill play before. Sometimes I think the Spurs front office is more interested in proving how much smarter they are than the rest of the league than making the solid pick. Incidentally, they haven't had a draft pick contribute since Parker in 2001. They said that they had been targeting this guy all along and hoping he would fall, just like Parker. But then again, they said the same thing about Corey Alexander.

I also wasn't pleased that they passed on Richard Hendrix and Bill Walker in the second round, although I do like Malik Hairston and the fact that they picked up Golden State's second rounder next year.

The Spurs need front court help. 3 or 4 spot would have been nice. On top of that Bowen is 37 -> CDR would have been a good replacement...

The thing with Chalmers is, can he really play PG? I don't know. He was more of a combo guard at Kansas. He's too small to play SG in the NBA.

So ... with Hill, you've got a guy who has played a lot of point before. His only crime is that he went to IUPUI, but according to a story in today's San Antonio paper, that was mostly by choice.

He wanted to stay in Indianapolis because his grandfather was about to die, and turned down the likes of Indiana and Florida to do it.

The question is: Had Hill gone to Fla and been part of two national championships, would we still be wondering if they should have taken Chalmers over him?

It's easy to second guess, but these guys have proven they know how to build a team, so much so that several other NBA teams have taken to ripping off their methods.

I'm willing to give the Spurs the benefit of the doubt here.

You would draft a player based on one clutch shot he took in a big game?

I am glad Pop and Buford put a little more thought in their picks than that.
