I want to build a deck

but "in" the backyard and not right off the house.

Im thinking of moving out like 10 feet or so and building a deck where 6-7 people can sit and drink while I am using either the gas or charcoal grille. Probably build some kind of walkway out to the deck from the back door.

Any suggestions, tips, or cautionary tales?

If you have the layout, I would suggest a paver patio rather than a deck. We have both a raised deck and a paver patio in our backyard. I would love to be able to get rid of that deck. The upkeep is a pain in the ***.

Why not clear a patch of grass off the yard and just cover it in gravel? Low maintenance, easy and cheap.

Because then you don't get to rent the two-man auger, which is really the only reason to build a deck.

The 2-man auger rules! My dad and I looked like two drunks trying to hold on to some sort of carnival contraption when the auger would catch on the limestone.

check out "Trex" wood composite for decking, my neighbor used it and its pretty good stuff
