I want a vacuum that sucks.

I need a vacuum to pick up mostly pet hair and to vacuum area rugs. I don't need a hardcore one that steams and other stuff like that. I found a Dirt Devil and a Bissel at Home Depot. The DD was 70 bucks and the Bissel was 89 or so. They both had HEPA filters which is a must for me and both had the bagless canisters which would also be nice. They both bragged of the 12 Amp motor.

I lifted both and the Bissel seemed to be more sturdy and had easier access to the canister removal. It had a light which is no big deal since I don't vacuum in the dark. i was trying to figure out what was making it more money. I have not bought a vacuum in awhile so how are Dirt Devils?

I have a Shark mini vac w/ air filtration and it is pretty damned good. Have seen that they have a larger version you can carry around on your shoulder for about the same price.

So, what do you folks think about these and where would you go to purchase a decent yet powerful vacuum for under a hundred dollars, w/ HEPA? Wal-Mart, Sears, Target and Home Depot come to mind. I would assume that Sears or Home Depot would be a little bit more. Maybe not Sears though w/ their own brand which is good (another brand w/ their name).

Thanks folks.

Sorry Loop, but "under a hundred" won't do pet hair and still maintain maximum suckage over the long haul. One word. Oreck.

Austin Vacuum...sales rep recommended a Panasonic for my ex gf a few years back when she was on a tight budget...she loved it. Maybe you can give them a call....

Oreck, eh? I have been told by some in the past they are great. I'll look into that. I will also look into the shop suggested. If their price is close enough to the others yet their expertise and advice is wonderful, they will get my business. I will pay a bit more for not only the advice but also keeping it local. i do that when I can.

The pet has short hair and does not shed too much, less when I am a good daddy and brush her daily real quick-like. so maybe a combo of a decent yet not top notch vacuum w/ me not being lazy may keep the vacuum sucking.

You might want to look into a Dyson as well. They're around $400 but are supposedly worth every penny. We'll probably be picking one up ourselves before too much longer.

Dyson's are the best and are priced accordingly. ther eis anolther brabd called Meil (sp?) thats also very, very good.

Somebody, quick, call 9-1-4384769 for Next. We don't want his last words in life to be about vacuums.

Austin Vacuum still services the Royal upright that came from my grandmother's store on the drag. They have at least three generations of experience in their business. Go there.

honest to god-

the vaccum I use is the phantom vaccum. Years ago it was on TV- and I saw it at Kmart and bought it. That was 7 years ago and I just had to retire the vaccum and get a new one- Worked great at getting all kinds of hair and dirt out of the rugs. I got another one about a month ago- from Kmart again. I got the super-duper version for around $160-170.

I know its not an orek or a rainbow, or a dyson- but for the money- it works great and the last one lasted longer than I thought was possible. If you are looking long term (as in 20 year investment) look at electrolux- but I would rather spend under $170 now and worry about getting a new model in 5 years.

If you're going to choose between those two, ConsumerReports liked the DD much more than that Bissell model. Especially for carpet cleaning.

My oreck is absolutely awesome. And it is lightweight and small unlike the Kirby Diesel engine competitor.

But not for $100. I have seen them on Ebay go for about $100 sometimes though (used).

I used to have Olkahomaphobia…OU Sucks!
A fear of carney’s and mobile homias…OU Sucks!
Like a Hoover or an Oreck or a Rainbow
Or a Kirby…Like a Black Hole!

OU Sucks! OU Sucks!

Try Rainbow. It uses a water filter. When your done you just dump the dirty water down the toilet. It leaves no dust particles in the air because it is trapped in the water.

Uh, thanks Squirrel. Would you consider a trade then? i could give you some used paper plates.

Thank you for the info from Consumer Reports. I have very little carpeting/rugs in the place and mostly hardwood. I would use the extensions more than anything to get pet hair along the baseboards, corners and under the sofa, bed, etc...

I would use it for the area rugs and also blinds. But my pledge is to brush her at least once a day. During the times when I live up to this the amount of decreasing hair is amazing. Also, now it is a hot topic as the weather gets warmer and her coat thins. Being short haired is a good thing because she does not shed much. I am just lazy about picking it up all the time.

Since I only have a hand held vacuum, it is a major task to do what I want to in order to get it where I want it. So a good/decent lower end vacuum is right up my alley for current needs.

I do appreciate the info on the others and it seems like when I need a really, really good vacuum I am down to 3 choices. Oreck would have the edge at this time w/out actually researching them. They seem to really suck.

I just got this one.amazon.com

it sucks pretty good. I have used it a couple of times and really like it. It sounds to me tha we have similar situations as far as pet hair and hard floors/area rugs. This vacuum does the trick for that situation, probably not so good with a carpeted place though. Not to mention cheep

I've got a Dyson Animal. They are expensive, but you would not believe the crap that they pick up. Does everybody here realize that their carpet has a layer of fine sand or dust that they don't know about? Trust me. I can't believe how excited I got over a freaking vacuum cleaner.

Don't know if Loopy got his suck machine yet or not, but I must cast another vote for Dyson. Do some research on vacuum's and you'll see that anything with a bag is going to be less effective than the Dyson. James Dyson is a damn genius and busted his *** to make the perfect vacuum. It's so well built and easy to use and will absolutely make you wonder how that **** got into your carpets or rugs. The clear canister is rather large, but I still empty that SOB 3 to 4 times when vacuuming the house. It picks up everything.

One really should not get excited about something like a vacuum, but it's inevitable if you get one of these. Don't get the Oreck, get the Dyson.

I ended up getting a Shark that converts from the carry around, to an upright. The only downside is that the bagless area is not as large as the ones 50 or more bucks but not that small to where the money is worth it. I think it is perfect for my needs now.

But if I ever have lots of carpet, due to this thread and talking to a vacuum guy online, wow, Oreck is the ****. You guys were not kidding. Great warranty too. The other Dyson seems pretty good too. Thanks for all the advice guys but most of those sucked too bad or good for my needs at this time. This board never disappoints.

Just picked up a Dyson Animal from Amazon last week. We almost bought one @ Sears for $500, but held off. Mrs. Ghost checked her Amazon Gold Box later that day & they had a reconditioned one for $280. We jumped on it.

I spent almost 3 hours vacuuming the house on Sat. before the Texas game. The wife was out having a girls' day out w/ her friend & I wanted to try the new vacuum so I thought I'd do the bedroom. Then I did the bath. Soon it was the entire upstairs, then the stairs, then the downstairs. All of the furniture that the cat sleeps on. Every nook & cranny in the joint.

I was hooked. The Dyson was pulling stuff out of the carpet & off the furniture that I couldn't imagine. I emptied the dirt cup 3 times. As amazing as the suction was I think I was just as impressed with how quiet the thing is.

After I finished I went over to my buddy's place where we listened to the game, drank some beers, & sat on his patio burning old scrap wood in his pit. I told him that I never thought a vacuum cleaner could be cool enough that it would actually feel like you were using a tool. I swear if there was a big 'Craftsman' label on the Dyson every man in America would want one.

Ghost: For a minute I thought you were going to say you went over to your buddies and vacuumed his house w/ your vacuum. That would have been better. I am tempted to go into your post and edit it to include this alternate ending. But I will probably refrain. lmao

Loopy, that'd be damn funny if you did make that edit.

Seriously, it was strange how much I was enjoying vacuuming that much. I'm a certifiable neatnik anyway, but I was just amazed at how clean I was getting things I didn't think were that dirty.

Going over to my buddy's to listen to the Texas game, drink beer, and burn ****...well, I figured you can't do anything more polar opposite than cleaning than that combination. But no matter how much I'm impressed w/ the Dyson I'm not about to start cleaning my friends' places.
