Anyone bought a new driver lately? Lookng for a couple recs to go try out. Not really concerned about price.

Are there places you can purchase drivers that crush the ball but may not be tour legal?

Lots of good ones.

Ping G10, Taylormade Tour Burner, Nike Sumo 2 all got gold from Golf Digest. Ping G10 and TM Burner won Golf Magazines Best Drivers. I have TaylorMade r7 and its ok but its problem is mostly user error.

CottenEyedHorn for the win...

Personally, I've always liked hitting Titleist and Ping drivers. Just as important as the club head, the correct shaft for your swingspeed matters. If you can save a few bucks and want a graphite shaft, buy the club with a metal shaft, then get your swingspeed clocked, then buy a good aftermarket graphite for the club. Spend the extra $8 (?) to get the spine alignment done, and take out any doubt of an occassional torque-caused misfire in your downswing.

Also, if you want to add 20 yards to your drive, lose a few lbs and strengthen your core. Better results than any driver will consistently offer.

I know you aren't concerned about price but Golfsmith is having their Friends & Family promo this weekend. PM me if you want the coupon.

I have the TM R7 superquad driver and love it.

however, there is no good answer to this that you will find here. you need to go to golfsmith and hit the clubs. buying one without hitting it first is a terrible idea.

Mrs. Deadhorse and I have both gotten drivers in the past month or so.

The other posters were right when they mentioned the shaft being as important as the clubface.

I ended up with the Cleveland XLS Tour edition with the regular flex shaft. The tour edition is different than the standard driver, which has a flattened club face to promote a draw since most weekend hackers slice a lot.

The upside to the tour edition is that it has less material on the clubhead since they didn't add 2 degrees to the club face. Therefore, it's lighter, you'll get more club speed, and your distance will improve.

So, basically the tour edition is a more powerful club than the regular but you better know what you're doing.

As for drivers in general, just know what you're buying for your skill level. There are tons of options out there.

I'd highly recommend the Cleveland XLS, though.
