I think

Judging by the time that its taking to hear about CP's moves, I think either Frese or Mitchell are the targets. I would absolutely prefer Walz, but would be more than satisfied with either of these two. Thoughts?

I think that is possible, and if Chris Dailey was considered a candidate it would apply to her as well. But I don’t think it is the only possibility.

It could be that they want to talk to everyone on the list before making an offer to anyone. It could be that they have a deal in place but want to wait on the announcement for some reason. It could be that they are still trying to sell the first choice on the opportunity. Or, they could have already moved on beyond their first choice.

Frese was actually my first choice before Coach G was hired. (I never really considered Coach G as an option before she was hired.) I think it would have likely been easier to get her here then than it would be now. But, I have obviously been surprised before. I have warmed a little to the idea of Mitchell over the past week. I really have no feel for how difficult it would be to get him to leave Kentucky.

I’m very ready to have this done, but also really want them to take the time to get it right. I’m going to try to not get concerned until maybe 10 days after the NC game. But, I probably can’t make it that long.

Or McGraw could also be a likely target. But I recently just remembered some news that may take Frese out of the relm of possibility. One of her twin boys has lukemia and is currently recieveing treatments from Johns Hopkins in the Maryland area. I think that would make the sell harder for her to come here because while austin area doctors are great, I think she would have a hard time giving up the world renowned healthcare that her son is currently recieving.

Also just announced today, KM at miami just signed an extension through the 2018 season so her name is likely out as well

You know, I have wondered about McGraw. I have no idea if she would even be interested. What I wonder is if Texas would even ask. There has been a lot of smoke for a while now about trying to get Notre Dame to move non-football sports to the Big 12, with Texas leading that push. I wonder if that would be considered inappropriate under the circumstances. I have no idea what the answer is, or how much truth there is in those rumors. Just a thought that crossed my mind.

I also have to wonder if Tennessee is doing anything behind the scenes to identify their next head coach. Given that everyone knows Pat has limited time left they could get away with having a search underway, at least at an exploratory level. I don’t think they will promote an existing assistant. Tennessee can get almost anyone that they want, and I think if that was their thinking that could have already named an assistant as the coach-in-waiting…….I don’t know. I’m just wondering if we could be working against Tennessee without that being public knowledge.

It was 12 days from Duke's elimination to Goestenkors' announcement as Texas coach. If they followed the same timeline, Walz's announcement would come Monday. Didn't Goestenkors visit UT on Tuesday and the announcement was Thursday?

The press speculation on likely replacements seems stupid to me Geno, Mulkey, Coale or Blair. All of these are just examples of more money sunk into the program with no promise of results. I still say pay someone in the half million dollar range and provide incentives for salary bumps based on championships.

I just think that we need the right coach. While I don’t think past success or salary guarantees anything, I also don’t believe that there is greater likelihood of success from a coach that demands less incoming salary. I never cared about the salary. The job is the job and my expectations should be the same regardless of the salary. If the right person is able to command a high salary because they already have one, then pay it. The Texas athletic department is not hurting for money. I agree that they shouldn’t throw a boat load of money at someone they could get for less. That’s just business. I’m also not claiming that the next coach has to be one of the highest paid in the country. I just don’t think the salary will determine success or failure. The answer to attendance is to get more butts in seats, not spend less on the coach. That salary is a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. If someone performs at less than their highest level because they already got paid then the problem isn’t with the salary. The problem is that you hired the wrong person.

I know that neither are popular choices, but Geno or Mulkey would be successful wherever they went, IMHO. If either came here, I think we'd get immediate positive results. Anyway, II don't think either would be willing to leave their current jobs, so it really doesn't matter.

re Coale, Mulkey, Geno, Blair, given their loyalty to their schools and the respect they get from those institutions, I would probably have a heart attack if any came here.

More realistically, and a very long shot, Kenya and her husband seem to meet several of the requirements and would at least get a look, if I had any pull--sorry, no pull here.

I also wonder if one of the coaches still playing is a target which really, imo, would seem to indicate the Kentucky coach as likely. He is the only one that is not intrenched for a decade or more at his current post. Walz could still be in the running. At this point, it's all speculation and in a way, it's fun trying to pinpoint who may be offered.

I'm not sure when UT actually posted this job....but isn't there a waiting period after that before the position can be filled?

looks like the job was posted last Friday, Coach G's last day, 03/23/12. Earliest date is listed as 04/01/2012. So, we could hear something by this weekend.

Yes to Sherri Coale!!!

I really wish folks (and the media) would stop touting Blair; he is 66 years old. He won't be coaching much longer. It took him 10 years to get A&M to the top, and more often than not, they underperformed based on their seed in the NCAA tourney. He had one good NCAA run at Arkansas, and that was it.

Now, when it comes to "coaches with connections to Texas", I started thinking how that turned out in other athletic programs at Texas:

David McWilliams (Football) -- fail
Jill Sterkel (Swimming) -- fail
Michael Center (Tennis) -- success
Bubba Thornton (Track) -- fail

Non-Texas connections:
Augie Garrido (Baseball) -- success
Mack Brown (Football) -- success
Rick Barnes (Basketball) -- success
Bev Kearney (Track) -- success
Connie Clark (Softball) -- success
Chris Petrucelli (Soccer) -- mixed results
Jerritt Elliott (Volleyball) -- success
John Fields (Golf) -- fail until this season
Kim Brackin (Swimming) -- success
Martha Richards (Golf) -- incomplete
Patty Fendick (Tennis) -- incomplete

Regardless of what part of the country we go to get a head coach, they have to be able to recruit. Would it be easier if the had Texas connctions? Maybe. But, there's no guarantee.

Wow, just noticed this article after I made the above post - looks like Ole Miss offered asst positions to both Kenya and Michael earlier today. I guess a lot of folks are noticing what a dynamic duo these two make. The article quotes one source as saying the deal is already done but Kenya says no decision has been made. Looks we would have to act fast if we had any interest in these two. Hate to see them go out-of-state but it may be an offer they can't refuse.

It didnt take Gary Blair 10 years to get aTm to the top. Maybe it took ten years to win a title but he had the aggies playing good ball 5 years before he won the title.

The point is made that having Texas ties does not necissialrily mean success as a coach at The University of Texas. However I believe the evidence presented by the non-ties is off and should be:

Non-Texas connections:
Augie Garrido (Baseball) -- success
Mack Brown (Football) -- success
Rick Barnes (Basketball) -- initial success/current failure
Bev Kearney (Track) -- initial success/down years due to her injury/current success
Connie Clark (Softball) -- failure (if you cannot win a NC with arguably the best pitcher ever in softball you are a failure)
Chris Petrucelli (Soccer) -- fail
Jerritt Elliott (Volleyball) -- success
John Fields (Golf) -- fail until this season
Kim Brackin (Swimming) -- success
Martha Richards (Golf) -- incomplete
Patty Fendick (Tennis) -- incomplete
