I suppose each scholarship is jealously guarded

I heard something the other day that made me think there is some kind of rotation. I can't recall verbatim but it was something from a radio ear close to the coaching staff to the effect of this is the year we get the such-and-such position.

Anybody know more?

I know that the OL was a priority this year. Last Feb Mack pretty much admitted that he should have recruited more than 2 in the OL. Fortunately this is a year when OL is strong in Texas so we're getting several.

I can see why the coaches would think of it that way, but when it comes down to it, it's kind of what Greg Davis said in the off week. It's not really about getting a specific "position" if you can take the best player available, such as Jordan Hicks.

If you go year-by-year on the recruiting sites, you can sort of see how that might work for the non-skill-player positions. OL is a huge commitment for 2011, just as DL was a big part of 2009-10. But I don't think they actively say "well we're only going to take 2 LBs this year" if Muschamp can find some other guys who are more worthy of a scholarship than other positions.

I am no insider or expert, however...

After following 13 recruting seasons under Mack (this being the 14th), it seems to me that:
1) priorities are set between Mack and the rest of the staff
2) We target certain positions
3) we target the best players regardless of positions
4) we create a priority list by name
5) we start making offers by priority
I believe it starts very scientifically, then Mack adjusts as he gains commitments or receives rejections.
Don't make any mistake: Mack is in charge, and the position coaches must "sell" a specific player if he isn't on the early priority list.
And the fact that Mack thinks of classes in 2s, then he will load up on a certain position when it's particularly strong in a given year, or skip on players at need positions in a weak year.
