I don't have Fast Fred's insight or eloquence, so I will just say that I thought it was great.

Take tissues if you are at all sensitive, especially about animals.

The Life of Pi is literally a movie that couldn't have been made a decade ago. The most charismatic character in the movie is a fierce CGI tiger named Richard Parker. The movie revolves around a fairly fantastic set of circumstances that result in an orphaned teenaged boy, Pi Patel, and Richard Parker stranded in a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean together. Pi needs to keep Richard Parker fed so that he doesn't wind up as dinner.

The movie is filled with magical visuals. When the freigher that Pi and Parker and Pi's family are traveling on sinks, Pi dives underwater and watches in horror as it sink slowly into the Marianas Trench, the ship's lights are still blazing. It is the most spectacular ship wreck since Titanic. At night the ocean is lit with luminescent creatures and the surface of the ocean reflects the stars. It is a beautiful movie. I saw the 2D version. I'd imagine that the 3D version is really spectacular.

All that said, despite a somewhat happy ending, this movie left me feeling down. Perhaps it was all the scenes showing cruelty to animals. I can't really say for sure. It's not a movie that I plan to watch again when it comes out on dvd. But, see it and make your own judgement. Roger Ebert gave it his highest rating.
