I need lots of trip ideas

OK, I started this thread a couple of years ago, but things have come around full circle and I need to revisit the question with a fresh perpesctive. I need the collective help of Hornfans. Every year, me and 2 buddies head off to a new destination. It is not a democracy. One guy picks, the other 2 show up. We are limited by certain geography (North America, Central America, Canada and Carribbean) and always leave on a Wednesday and return on a Monday.

I get to pick the destination in 2009. This will be our 4th trip having already gone to Boundary Waters, Moab and Belize. This trip was designed to avoid the traditional "golf in Vegas, Bourbon St mess, I'm still reliving Spring Break" type trip.

Clearly, based on past trips, we like being outdoors and have a tolerance for physical activity and adventure. This does not mean that we have to "out-macho" each other every year.

All of that said, bestow upon me your best ideas for a trip sometime between August and October of 2009. Please keep all of the above parameters in mind. Thanks.

Fishing the Florida Keys
Road trip down the Baja peninsula
Appalachian Trial (I hear Virginia has the best stretch)
Go noodling in Oklahoma

Hike Denali, Yellowstone, Yosemite or the Canadian Rockies (Banff and/or Jasper.)
Surf Hawaii.
Go to a game at New Yankee Stadium, Fenway or Wrigley.
Go to Laramie and see the Horns play Wyoming.

Bachelor's Gulch

Cayman

I don't like Mexico but hte women outnumber the men in Cancun about 20-1.

Cabo

Broadmoor

Short raft trip through part of the Grand Canyon

Hilton Head

Rent a house boat on Lake Powell in Utah

Beach time in Destin, Florida

Somewhere on a Beach on the Yucatan where you can go see ruins.

Some great ideas so far. A couple more notes, 2/3 of the group is married and the other guy is close. While we certainly like to look at women, it don't make much of a **** anymore.

Also, the original purpose of the trip was to avoid hanging on the beach/trips centered on drinking, etc. I'd rather do that with my wife. Thanks for all of the great responses, I've been researching almost every one of these ideas in more detail.

There is a DVD (both Netflix and Blockbuster carry it online) called Globe Trekker: Best Treks. It has several good suggestions within the geographical limits you have set. Much better than reading a brochure!

And if you get semi-serious about the App. Trail, there is a documentary called "Trek" that you need to see. I don't think the major DVD renters carry it, but you can buy it online. If your group is not in shape, and want to do a section of the trail, you had better start your training NOW. A day hike of a couple of miles up a mountain is one thing - but to do it day after day, even for 3 - 4 days, is a killer if you are not in shape.

Personally, I liked the Florida Keys fishing idea!

Yeah, you definitely don't want an Appalachian trial. Not an ideal jury pool for an outsider. Appalachian trail's a much better suggestion.

This trip is probably more than you want to spend, but I bet you could figure out a do-it-yourself type of arrangement where you model a trip after this one on a tighter budget. Basically, you could ride this train through Copper Canyon and then go hunting or fishing with some local outfit.

Amazing

Go climb Roraima in Venezuela. one of the coolest hikes I've ever been on, plus we only saw 2 other people all 4 days we were hiking.

If you haven't been to west Texas, make a road trip out of it and go.

Marathon - camp at the Marathon Motel
Big Bend - Chisos Lodge, beer at La Kiva
Balmorhea - swim (or scuba) in the spings
Guadalupe Mnts NP - climb Guadalupe Peak (highest pt in Tx), spend the night on the mnt.

PCH-1/ Carmel to North of San Fran- You can mix the outdoors and the wine country. Plenty of hiking, surfing, kayaking, whale trips between Carmel and the wine country to balance out good dining and wine.
