I just moved to 78704...

I've always lived central and North-ish, so I'm clueless down here (although I love it already).

Tell me some good restaurants around here that are not Tex Mex. Any prices, take out, eat in, etc.

Artz Rib house. Vespaio, Congress CAfe, Mars, these are all pricy places of course. I would just walk around and scope out the scene.

after living here for the last 8 mo's, be prepared for ****** restaurant service in the 04. freddies place has terrible service but is a pretty cool place w/ halfway decent food. torchy's abound. doc's on south congress is damn solid any day of the week for drinks. polvo's is ok for drinks as well. homeslice and southside pizza is ok <congress ave>. treehouse italian gets good reviews. frans/dans hamburgers, whatever the hell it is on congress, is good for the greasy burger/fries fix.

a few other tips... between 290 and oltorf, take congress. between oltorf and downtown take south 1st. the 1L/1M bus route <congress to downtown> is about the only reliable route in cap metro... that route must have 30 buses on it.

grocery wise, dont even go to the HEB on oltorf, its just awful. i drive to the randalls on lake austin or bee caves before going two blocks to the HEB.

and magnolia cafe is pretty gross now, its just a dirty place.

Not sure if you're into it, but that's the best Hooters in the city around there as well. And obviously, there's downtown.

Lived in that neighborhood for years . . . loved Guero's . . . don't really care to hear all the arguments as to how it isn't "real" TexMex. (WTF is "real" TexMex?)

I haven't tried the fancy new Italian joint near Continental Club -- Botticelli's? Could be good.

Threadgill's is hard to argue with.

Gypsy (on Barton Springs) is outstanding Italian food. Mostly meats & seafood, not as much pasta as the aforementioned Treehouse Grill (which is better than Vespaio, in my opinion, but I'm not real into nouveau cuisine).

leslie is around there a lot yes. also, you will see the guy that rides a bike shirtless and has a cat sitting on his shoulder just chilling while he's hauling ***. it can be quite distracting.

for late night food, the breakfast taco's at La Mexicana <s 1st and johanna> are solid and very cheap.

Take your dog to Freddie's Place on S 1st. Lots to do outside, under pretty trees and lights.... events almost every night. And the food's pretty good, too.

south congress cafe
homeslice pizza
southside pizza
the place next door to vespaio, owned by the same folks
shady grove for the outdoors
artz rib house
fran's for a good jalepeno, bacon cheeseburger

I love living out by the lake, but I sure miss 04
