I downloaded Firefox today...

It is running fine so far, but is there anything I should know that wasn't listed on their website?

What do I need to do to prevent popups and spyware installations? Anything, or is the protection built in?

Should I delete IE off my hard drive or leave it on, just in case?

Any friendly advice will be appreciated.

Leave IE since you will need it occasionally. I've never done anything in particular to help block popups but there might be an extension. Use the tabbed browsing feature a lot.

Thanks for the replies. I hate to sound like a paranoid SOB, but the word of mouth makes Firefox sound almost too good to be true. After dealing with IE for so long, I'm naturally wondering where the catch is.

I use the cookie manager - I actually make it ask me before accepting cookies the first time I visit a site and I don't let one site give me cookies for another. Takes a few days to get it trained, but then you don't have a bazillion cookies.

The only catch is that Firefox works great because hackers haven't had time to screw it up yet. Eventually they will and we'll all move on to the next latest greatest browser. Until then, I'm liking it. However, I do have a program at work that only works with IE.

The only real catch I've run into so far is that it ends up taking up a good chunk of memory after you've used it for a while.

Also get the "All In One Mouse Gestures"

They are phenomenal. To know what they are google them, read about them, download them, and install them.

You won't be sorry.

I have noticed that more and more pop-ups are starting to get through Firefox. It's not a lot yet, but I've gone from none at all to a few a week, depending on the sites I visit. Most of the sites that seem get through are tech related. I'm pissed that any tech sites would even have pop-ups, but I'm not surprised.

I can't find it right now, but a while back, I found a website that tested a couple dozen different kinds of popups. You go to a page and mark whether or not the popup was successful and then you go the the next page to try a different popup technique.

FWIW, IE and Firefox performed similarly with IE having one fewer popup than Firefox and for the most part, the techniques that caused a popup on one worked on the other.

I'll post a link here if I come across it again.

Sheriff,

I'm not sure what Adblock is. I have Firefox configured to block pop-ups.

Here is one. It doesn't open a pop-up every time, just sometimes. If I click on a few of the tabs, it may cause one. Of course after getting it to work, I just tested it again, and couldn't.

I don't remember any of the others. None is a site that I frequent. I usually end up on these sites when researching a computer problem of one sort or another.

I have been to the site that dustin mentions, but I can't remember it either.

idig,

I tried the tabs for a while on that site....nothing came up for me......well, except for when i saw the blonde wearing glasses and a burnt-orange shirt....

Adblock is an extension for Firefox that blocks ads on websites as well as popups. You may want to try it out. The Link

Also use this guy's filter with it: The Link (Read the instructions sheet, specifically the advanced instructions at the bottom.)

I'm diggin Firefox, but oddly it somehow disabled the spellchecker on Outlook.

Maked my writing lifr a bit more dafficult, if you now what I meane.

Downloaded it on Monday and have been pleased. Has blocked all pop ups, and about 99% the ads. The only problem I've run into is using it for web-based Outlook - the toolbars have been incomplete, and the print function doesn't work quite right. But other than that, it's been great.

i just d/l it after reading this thread and man, i think i'm in love!
