with this question but who's jose? I remember some time back that one of the texas baseball fans died (I saw something on the old 360 board). However, can anyone give me a brief overview of who he was.
I just got back from Omaha earlier tonight and Jose was all over the place. Rosenblatt looks very different than it did on my two previous trips but the images of Jose were everywhere since he was such a big part of my two trips to the CWS.
I sat to Jose's left at baseball games for many, many years. In 1982 I was to Jose's left when our new athletic director arrived to his first CWS game the championship weekend, had the seat behind us and told us to sit down and be quiet so he could watch the game. Jose and I set him straight and were told, much later, who we had explained the concept of a UT baseball fan to thinking we would be concerned about having offended our new athletic leader. Jose's response, paraphrased, was "he's in Texas now, get over it!"
My other trip was in 1989 for the championship game. Again, I was to Jose's left. Jose would grab your hand when things weren't going well and that day he had a death grip on mine. Then we lost and he cried. He always cried at the end of big games, win or lose, any sport, and he cried a lot that day. I think the rain that poured down after the last out against Houston might have been Jose letting us know he was happy.
Jose loved UT, he loved UT baseball and he loved everyone he knew.
Something occurred to me the other day. You remember how Jose made friends everywhere he went? How many of us know each other because we came together in friendship through Jose?
Well, I have realized that there was someone up in Heaven who didn't have any friends. And God said to Himself, "Who's the friendliest person on earth? Jose Pena!"
And that's why God called him home. There was someone in Heaven who needed and friend -- who needed Jose -- more than we needed him.
I miss him every day, and more so now, even though I know he had the best seat of all for the CWS.
And John, that rainbow photo is spectacular! If that's not proof that Jose was there, I don't know what is.
It was a very emotional Omaha for all of us who knew Jose. He seemed to be with me everywhere I went this week and I think this championship is for him.
