I don't know what to do

Growing up I was a Dallas Cowboys fan. Didn't even watch college football.

I show up as a freshman in the fall of 1998, knowing nothing about the Texas Longhorn football team other than they were terrible the year before.

One man made me start watching: Ricky Williams. I remember our offense was tough to stop by anyone- particularly late in the year. Unfortunately Texas Tech had our number so we were relegated to the Cotton Bowl. Still an improvement over 1997.

1999 came and went- I remember the high of beating Nebraska in Austin (Wow that was the most fun I've ever had at a football game!) and the low of losing our last three (and the Cotton Bowl to Arkansas and Coach Nutt with the horns down).

2000- I went to my first and only TX-OU game that year. Boy did I pick a good one to go to. Ugh. I also remember Chris Simms having a biggillion passing yards against A&M and I thought- man he is gonna be good!

2001. Lost to OU again, this time with a superman dive by the bad roy williams- the play that gets replayed every year. Vomit. I remember somehow OU lost to OSU- wow I was so excited. We got to go to the BIG12 Title game! And then team after team ranked above us lost- and it seemed like we would play Miami in the BCS Championship game. Well, we know where that went.

2002. Lost to OU again. I ship off to the Navy in December. Missed the Bowl game while in boot camp.

2003. In Navy Training. Come to find out one of my good Navy Friends went to OU. I got a lot of flak from him after this game...

2004. In Navy Training. I remember this guy named Vince Young, the savior. I remember losing to OU AGAIN- this time 12-0. NOT A SINGLE POINT. Thanks Greg. Of course I remember the ending- Beating Michigan in the Rose Bowl and Vince's prophesy, "we'll be back!"

2005. Arrive at my Submarine- Miraculously we are in the shipyard in Hawaii- So I get to watch EVERY SINGLE game of the season. Man- What a ride. I had a feeling like we could not lose a single game. Even when we played Kansas and 4th and 19, I just had a feeling, "Vince will get it done..." Wow what an amazing finish too- I won't forget the Trojans vs. anything (1995 Neb, 2001 Miami, the Nazis). I won't forget Leinert saying, "We're still the better team..."

2006. I am out to sea on deployment. I miss every single game.

2007. I am out to sea. I get to watch the Aggies beat us... and us shellacking Arizona State...

2008. Wow. Well, I again get to watch the entire season. We beat up on everyone- including Oklahoma. And then we run up to Tech. Ugh, Tech. They seem to knock us out of BIG 12 Championship games like its going out of style. And then OU goes because of computers... Ugh ******* tiebreakers. We do beat Ohio State.

2009. I get to watch every game. Two man offense- McCoy and Shipley (roommates in case you didn't know). What an amazing ride. Then the elation of the BCS Championship game- the first 5 minutes where we were beating up on Bama... then I moved from beer to hard liqour- last time I really got wasted. I barely remember the 2nd half.

and now- 2010. So far have watched every game- man. the worst season since 1999 is unfolding before my eyes. I have never seen Texas not win at least 9 games in a season. and this may be my first. I'm not sure how to handle it.

Any advice?

Yes, what ever you drank in the second half of last years championship needs to be done every Saturday we are playing.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself... suck it up... We've been spoiled due to our long run over the last 10 years or so. We now feel like the fans of 90% of all other college football fans... i.e. their team doesn't win all the time and even loses a game that they shouldn't lose now and then. We just need to show up and root for the Horns and hope for the best. I know it's frustrating, but this team will be back at some point.

I'm not saying that we should just keep the status quo. Far from it. But as fans, we don't have any control over that. We just need to support the team, just like most other fans support their team. Mack will decide whether he needs to make any coaching or personnel changes. Coaching changes will likely be addressed *after* the season, not during. So, for this season, we are what we see. Nobody knows how well we'll play on any given week. If Mack likes the feeling that he has after the debacle with ISU, he'll keep the status quo. If he wants something better, he'll hopefully make some changes. It's not our call, it's his. He's the CEO pulling down the big iron.

I am NOT feeling sorry for myself. Just saying that we have been blessed with quite a run the last 12 years and it seems to be crashing down this season. Weird feeling.

It's understandable considering you spent a lot of time at sea, but 4th-and-19 was in 2004. In 2005, we obliterated Kansas something like 66-13 in Austin.

Anyway, just hang in there. We're Texas, and we'll be back.

I have been following Texas since 69 there have been several poor Longhorn football teams in that period. Hang in there and support them they will be back just dont know when.

I seriously doubt a submariner who has been at sea on various deployments would ever "feel sorry" for himself over a game played by 19-year olds

Been following and LOVE the Cowboys and Horns more than any other, but as you all know, neither team is doing well this year. I'm not happy, but I will continue to support and love them win or lose!

My advice would be to submerge for about two years and focus on the job at hand. When you come back up.. you'll be rewarded by a better Texas team and feel like a winner all over again.

for the record, kansas game and 4th and 19 was 2004 at kansas.. 2005 was a ******* mudhole in austin. i was in vegas and won money on our horns/vince

Opps, you are right. 4th and 19 was 2004. ah well, many memories from 2004 and 2005 have blended together. Both were pretty good Longhorn years.

I am on shore duty now so alas, I cannot just go to sea for 2 years and come back to better football...

I just meant that the last 4 full seasons I watched (as in every game) were 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2009. The best 4 years of the Mack Brown era, and now that I am on shore duty I get this season. ::sigh::
I guess these things really do go in cycles. After seeing my NFL team driven into the gutter by Jerry Jones- I am now seeing the crashing of the Longhorns. One of the things we have going for us is that Mack Brown is NOT Jerry Jones...

I still call DKR the House that Ricky Built.

The place was dead before that season. We'll never know how the Mack Brown era might have turned out differently had Ricky not come back. Getting off to that magical start was critical.
