with another year of poor defense and no clutch hitting. I know it's early but my goodness that **** bugs the hell out of me. I trust Augie will turn it around but right now it's just bad.

I say we run rule Cougar High.

He pulled Hernandez in the middle of the inning after he let a Rice runner advance a base due to his lack of hustle.

The errors really don't worry me yet. It seems like nearly ever season we have problems with errors early on but we always get them fixed. What does worry me is the lack of clutch hitting the past two nights. That's been one of the main contributing factors to the last two early exits in 06 and 07. We absolutely can not leave 2 or 3 guys on base against elite competition.

The schedule is ridiculous, and I sincerely hope that the NCAA sees the error of their ways and corrects the situation next season. They're forcing teams to play five games a week and take a minimum of one day off, which leaves one day out of seven for the teams to practice. And that's without even broaching the subject of how much class these guys have to be missing in order to fit everything in. Colossal mistake by the NCAA. Is February weather really so much better than January weather that it merits putting the athletes through this?

As for the defense, hitting, etc., so far I think it's much more about lack of effort than lack of practice. I'm sure that with so many newcomers (freshmen, transfers, etc.), it's been more difficult than it normally would have been, but I remarked to a friend last night after the third inning that Texas looked like they were playing an exhibition game. It didn't look like they gave a damn at all. The uncharacteristically poor throws in the field by guys who are practically professionals (Kyle Russell, I'm looking at you), the countless pitches that they all just stood there and watched float by ... that's not because they don't have enough time to practice. It's because they didn't want it badly enough.

The potential of this team is highly uncommon in college baseball, but if they're going to keep playing like a win and a loss are the same thing, then it doesn't matter.

I know most college baseball fanatics won't like this suggestion, but why not shorten the season by 5 games or so? Doing that, along with a slightly later start than in years past could alleviate some of this ridiculously condensed schedule.

As I understand it, there's a move afoot to allow teams to scrimmage each other in the fall (something like up to 4 games). The games would not count towards their records, but would subtract from their allowed games in the spring. i.e. if you play 4 extramural scrimmages in the fall, you would be allowed only 52 games in the spring... but you'd be the better for having faced the competition.

I don't think Augie said it in that context. The announcers on the FSN broadcast last night made a comment after an error (I think when Chance Ruffin blew the throw-over) that they talked to Augie before the game about the condensed schedule, and he remarked that one thing he really disliked was the lack of practice time. I think they were comparing that statement to the errors Texas committed in the game.

TS...don't be discouraged. Augie was not using the condensed schedule as an excuse for the way we have played this weekend. He has been discussing his displeasure with what the NCAA did since before the season began.

Let me see if I get this right.

No pitching and No hitting.

Stayton Thomas comes in and shuts down the Cougars in 1 2/3 innings of work and Connor Rowe comes through with a CLUTCH single to win the game.

NO pitching and No hitting

Sounds like to me that there were pitching and Hitting When Texas needed it the most.

Wow. Some complete over-reactions here.

We play bad in 2 games, all of a sudden we can't pitch or hit ?

Hit the panic button ...

I didn't want to post after sitting in the stands Friday and Saturday, but I will say right now the difference in the years we got to Omaha and recently is solid defense. It comes back to bite you in the regional.

I don't know if it is lack focus or what, but they looked pretty terrible in pregame warmups against Rice, as well. Spraying the ball all over the place.
