That right there is the best burger meal in Austin. I mean, there is an open flame grill with a brick chimney in the middle of the freaking restaraunt. I rest my case, your honor.
And as far as atmosphere goes, you cant beat the 100 year old lady at the counter with the greatest blue afro wig in the history of the world.
I've been eating there for over 30 yrs and the fact that it hasn't changed one bit keeps me going back.
The elderly lady at the counter is the owner and has her son and I think a daughter working there as well. They are all there every day they are open and shut the place down when they take vacation.
As an Austinite, what I love the most is running into old friends that have been eating there as long as I have.
I thought they were stilled closed due to their annual July family vacation time. I know what I am having for lunch today. BTW the make a good grilled chicken sandwich as well.
Oh yeah, I live less than a mile away. Top Notch rules.
ditto wedgie and autintexas. i could just about walk there. its been a while since i've been though. been hitting fran's at lunch since i work south. thats a close second to top notch.
I've been in Austin since 1959, and for some unknown reason never had a Top Notch burger. Went about three months ago - it was one of the best I've had since the Holiday House on Airport folded. Dang good burger.
I guess I need to go back and give it another shot, because I ate there after living in Austin for a year or so way back when and thought it was mediocre at best. I'll go check it out and report back!
Took the wife and kiddos this evening. I ate half a small burger and one onion ring, half a small chocolate malt. It was fan-freaking-tastic. Burgers cooked over open flame give me orgasms. If I had known about how great this place was, I might have never had the gastric bypass. *sigh*
My 8 year old son thought that cooking over the open flames was "cool".
Next time, I try the grilled chicken sammich.
Yes the greatness of Top Notch. For a fast food type burger they can not be beat. TN is my fav; but Dan's/Fran's, Hilbert's and P Daddys all rank high on their own merits
BTW glad the grilled chicken sandwich, as well as the fried chicken, have been acknowledged.
