I am not a Brian Bozworth fan but...

If there was one guy that played for OU that just hated and despised everything that was "Burnt Orange" it was Bozworth. I don't know if it was true, but the guy was an expert at spitting "loogies". Then you had that "NCAA t-shirt" episode on national TV.I have tried to find a Sooner that I despised more than him in the eighties or ever and I don't think I can find one.

Now be that as it may, and has I look back, and strange as it seems, I admire him for his "intensity", even though it pushed the boundaries of sanity. There were many times in the eighties that I wished our Horns got a large dose of that "intensity". The guy played with " a motor wide open" at least 90% of the time. I guess I was thrilled when I saw the CBS camera shot of him in that '85 game with the Canes where they were finally getting their a..es beat, and at the recieving end of a large dose of well needed humility. Boz always had those jerseys half cut and it did not look cool that day.

Which brings me to my second point of thirty years later praise;

It was about three or so years ago and some of the OU old hands were having kind of a television family reunion with Switzer on hand. Brian was there also, and each had his turn to speak about old times. When the camera got to Boz, he gave a small speech about what the school and the coach meant to him, and then something strange happened.

The BIg Bad Boz broke down and cried and apologized for the disgrace he had brought to the program, school, and teamates. Man was I impressed!

Would it not be great if every guy or gal that has done something unlawful, criminal and just plain stupid and had disgraced THE University of Texas would follow Boz's example and apologize for the errors of their way?

Now thats something to think about and especially with some of the stuff thats happened lately.

Ahh, Boz.... interesting post. He is THE only football player in college or pro I ever despised, no change that to hated. I will give him his due - he was damn good in college, but I hated that jackass in the day... to your point, it is a good thing he is remorseful now and has apologized for some of the things he did long ago.

Boz reminded me, after the fact, of the big curly-haired defensive tackle in "Revenge Of The Nerds." His acting career should have been so good.

He flipped me off on I-635 in Dallas when I was in middle school. We drove by him after college but, I think, before he flamed out of the NFL. He was in a corvette or trans-am with a license plate that said, "The Boz." Of course I gave him a Hook 'Em and he flipped me off.

At the time, I thought it was pretty cool. Looking back....what a dick.

I can think back to his picture on the back of the fleer card...or was it upper deck? Either way, he had on awesome shades and his sweet spiked haircut...coolest back of a card ever.

I was young and didn't realize who he was..or what he stood for at that point. But that was cool to me.

The Boz definately marched to a different drummer. If you think he was a half bubble off plumb you need to check out ex-sooner Joe Don Looney.

Getting off thread topic, but ahh, the late Joe Don Looney... very talented and highly recruited RB. He played in HS for HC Bill Allen of Ft. Worth Pascal in my early youth. Came to ou in fall 1962 if I recall correctly. Started for ou as a Soph RB under HC Bud Wilkenson - lot's of issues and was eventually kicked off the team.

Wosterman...
Looneytunes played his last game against us. They were rated # 1 and we beat then handidly..Looneytunes had a very bad game and I believed he fumbled 2or 3 times and rushed for about 20 yds all day.. I sat in the endzone near the ramp and watched his expression as he came by after the game.. He was one pissed *******.. After game, he got into a fight with a trainer in the dressing room and ole Bud booted his *** off the team.........

OTF nailed it. He was there.... October 1963 when the #1 Sooners were upset by #2 UT and eventual Natl. Champ 24-7 and OTF was right, it was not that close. LooneyTunes was shut down by Appleton, Nobis, etc.and that was the end of his college career.

Bosworth was one the smartest players of his day. He was the first to really capitalize on the "odd ball" image. (Dennis Rodman came later.) I remember reading how in college Bosworth started a company that made anti-Bosworth t-shirts. Sharp dude.

Last I read about him, he had saved and invested most of his NFL money and was a real estate agent in Malibu.

I covered Bosworth's high school team when I was a sports reporter. He was a dick then, and nothing changed when he went to BlowU.

I remember an article in Sports Illustrated and I think it was written after he had turned pro but I am not sure. He said he worked at a Chevrolete (I think) plant that produced cars and he said he and a friend there would put a nut in the motor and it didn't produce damage but just made noise and it had a note scratched on it that said Gotcha!
Needless to say the President of that plant wrote a letter of apology to the readers saying his plant was concerned with quality products and blah blah.

I didn't buy a General Motors product for several years after that article needless to say.

I was a huge Husker fan and Boz was my favorite player at that time. I had the book, a pair of the 44 Blues (his sunglasses) and a buddy of mine even had the haircut. This was all while living in Western Nebraska.

The title of this thread is an oxymoron (at the pt where one comes to the 'but'!!)

Just kidding, SH. I appreciate the thread and agree with the sentiments. Thanks for sharing

I despised him, too.

Even worse, it was the beginning of the sports press (the stupidest people in the world paid to write) ballyhooing any atypical behavior of athletes.

The giggling morons on TV and the pundits acted as though Boz's wearing Akers' name on his shoes was the cleverest thing they'd ever seen. Dumbasses.

I've heard that "Stone Cold" (I think that was the name of his movie) was one of the worst ever (I'll take someone else's word for it). I read his book and concluded that once the steroids (which may have caused his shoulder problems) wore off he was a fairly reasonable guy. He was the co-host of some football gameday show on TBS and again, my recollection was that he was kinda OK. One of my favorite banners of all time was the one someone hung in the old Kingdome that read, "Where is the $11 million lemon?".

BiS,

Rick Reilly wrote that article in Sports Illustrated. Let's just say that the entire thing read like Reilly had his face firmly planted in Bosworth's lap.
