Comparing the last two seasons using only the criteria of Scoring and Antiscoring, we see that the 2010 team Scored 17 PPG less and Antiscored 7 PPG more, a 24-point swing leading directly to our miserable 5-7 record.

Had the Antiscoring kept pace with 2009, the record would have been... wait for it... 5-7.

Had the Scoring kept pace with 2009 (while Antiscoring still allowed the opponents that additional 7 PPG), we would have seen 9-3, which is what most of us seemed to be expecting, mas o menos.

If both criteria had matched 2009, we would have had the 12-1 or 13-1 season we hoped for.

There have been all kinds of arguments about the causes of both Scoring and Antiscoring failures, but ultimately it seems that MacBrown agrees with the apparent majority opinion of fans, and placed the blame on his coaching staff, and replaced most of it.

Many, if not most, of us expect to see significant, even dramatic, improvement, at least on the Scoring portion of our problems, and I am among those who also expect little or no dropoff on the Antiscoring portion.

I do not - at this point - expect to see us in the CCG, let alone the MNCG... I do not expect a season much better than perhaps 9-3, give or take a game. If we somehow reach midseason at 6-0, this expectation is subject to revision.

What I DO expect is to see effort and competence from both coaches and players, widely lacking in 2010. I expect to see game-planning and play-calling that address the weaknesses of our opponents and the strengths of our players. I expect to see players in top physical - and mental - condition, making improvements in execution as we go along the course of the season.

If that makes me "greedy", then so be it.
