I-35 on a holiday weekend

I am traveling from Austin to Ft Worth on Friday evening. I hear I-35 can be a nightmare on a holiday weekend. Do I risk taking I-35 or is there a better route? Someone was telling me that 183 to 281 might be an option to get to Ft Worth rather than braving the stop and go traffic on I-35.

Any way would be better. I live much of my day on that road in Austin on a normal day and will live much more of it Thursday and Friday. Avoid it.
