Hurt Locker

The build up for this movie will hurt it. The characters are good and the central character in particular is interesting to watch, but the movie just sort of runs on and really doesn't seem to know how to end. Now that I've written that, I see how that could be a metaphor for the war in general, but it doesn't make for a satisfying movie experience.

It's worth seeing, but merely good instead of great. The only qualification I will use for my opinion is that I've seen Generation Kill which is excellent. The excellence of Generation Kill may be making me undervalue the Hurt Locker.

I expect some will really like the movie, and I'll be interested to see what grabs them so much. It will also be interesting to see if having seen Generation Kill affects other viewers of this movie.

I can't think of the other "serious movie" releases since Jan 1, so maybe he is right. The more serious movies usually appear in cooler weather. When I think of movies released so far this year, I can just recall blockbusters like Angels & Demons, Star Trek, Terminator, etc.

They need to open it up to more theaters, right now it is only playing at 1 theater in the Dallas area.

I'm bumping my own thread. I'm surprised there hasn't been more response. I thought a lot of HF posters would see this movie. I recommend that you do.

Over time, I've found myself giving this movie a little more credit than when I saw it. I begin to think that the central character, something of a puzzle, sort of embodies how we as a country sometimes go to war.

I won't bump this up again, but I'd really like to read other persons' thoughts about the movie.

I watched this movie so long ago I can't remember all of it. But what got me was the overall realistic feel the character seemed to have at the end of not knowing what to do once back in the real world. It takes some adjustment to go from blowing up stuff, shooting guns that would be illegal for civilians and jumping from helicopters to the mundane of day to day life. Not that I wanted to go back but it was strange at first.

Saw it in at the theater in Dallas you were talking about. It was a Friday daytime showing. It was basically sold out.

I think people want well made, grown up dramas that dont pander to the box office and pre-teens. If we dont fill seats for movies like this in 10 years our choices will be The Very, Very Last House on the Left and Not Another Teen Movie 4.

I liked this movie alot. They had several times to go "Hollywood" and decided to play it straight instead. Very well made. Great acting. Great action and suspense. I recommend it to people.

It's in one theater in Houston (think it's just one - Angelika). I'm not driving that far to see it. Waiting on it to hit the AMC megaplex.

Has any movie about the Iraq War done well commercially? For some reason people just don't seem to be interested in movies on that topic. Could be that most of them were downer movies, which had something to do with it. If this is a more uplifting movie, then maybe it can get over the hurdle.

Hmmm.

The Iraq war is a clusterfuck that never should have happened except for a ******* president that was determined to do it.

Anywho...The US Military has performed brilliantly in Iraq. Perhaps moreso than in any other conflict.

If you need a John Wayne-esque character to make you feel good, then fine.

Meanwhile, I will remain filled with gratitude for a bunch of young men and women that did a great job despite being put in a position that they never should have been put it.

I read a lot of military history...volumes. Wellington's campaign in Spain, Waterloo, Napolean in Russia, Gallipoli, all things WW2, Korea........but for some reason, I always pass up 3 things...1) Civil War, 2) Vietnam and 3) Iraq. I have no idea why, but they just don't do it for me.

My current obsession is post WW2 Germany.....I can't read enough about it.

I need to get out more... I saw the name of this post and thought it was about this guy:

I saw it yesterday. Very good. Some guy walking out of the theater said it was "very realistic". I was thinking that unless you've been there and done that how would you know? And I doubt he's been there and done that. Anyway. It's my pick for either movie or director winner for the Oscar.

Show this in high-schools and you'll have a lot of kids wanting to be bomb techs.
