Hulu Plus is better for recent television shows, but they've really capped the number of episodes for current seasons. Netflix is (and always has been) just ok. Unless there's some documentary you're dying to see on it, you're only going to get average quality stuff for the same $8/month.
Another issue with Netflix is its contracts with the networks/studios. They'll have a movie on there because of television deals (like Starz, Showtime, etc.), and the movie will disappear as soon as the studio no longer has that contract with the TV network. I still subscribe to it primarily for older TV seasons that I never got around to pre-DVR days.
Hulu Plus sometimes doesn't even carry the "regular" episodes of stuff that they show on "regular" Hulu, which blows my mind. There is something weird about the rationale to show episodes of television shows for free on a computer screen, but not through a paid service by the same provider. So odd. Hulu Plus doesn't have a ton in the way of movies, but it's improving. If you look at their "most viewed" list, it's obvious that teenage boys are driving the ratings. They're all a bunch of D-list movies with a lot of skin on the posters.
Amazon Prime might solve some of your problems with both Netflix/Hulu Plus. But it's still kinda limited.
Well I use to be a big netflix subscriber with DVD and streaming content until netflix went crazy and hiked up their price on dvd rental to something outrageous like s 60% hike increase. I cancelled the following day. lol I think they lost like almost a million customers in one quarter. I went back to netflix half heartedly last year but when they were offering streaming content at $7.99 but I have dropped it recently. To be honest the only things I watched on it are original cable network programming and a lot was on HBO but HBO pulled out of their contract in a dispute with Netflix so they pulled their original programming from netflix's library. So the only thing really I'd watch was documentaries. Anyhow...if I really want to watch something these days I just download torrents. That's pretty much how I watch any show these days like Walking Dead or whatever. YES other then sports...the internet has killed television for me because I can almost always find it online for free.
I'm doing the free trial on Hulu Plus, really like the Criterion collection they have available. Lots of great foreign films I haven't seen which will take me longer than the one free week to watch. Also looks like a large catalog of anime. There aren't many network shows I watch, so I don't need to catch up or anything there. Guess I'll do the Hulu + for awhile.
I'm disappointed in Hulu plus. I originally subscribed to watch episodes of Lost since you need plus to watch them all as opposed to just the 5 most recent ones, but other than that I haven't gotten much benefit out of it. PLUS We still have to watch commercials which is what frustrates me most.
Yeah, I dropped Hulu Plus PDQ because I still had to sit through commercials even though I was paying for the service. If they would get rid of that, I'd probably go back.
Netflix is MUCH better than Hulu if you have kids, btw. Hulu has VERY little for them to watch. Amazon Prime is pretty good, but you still have to pay to watch some things (like recent television shows) despite already having payed for the Prime Membership.
We like Netflix a lot. It doesn’t have all the latest films, but that has actually been kind of good because it encouraged me to check out a lot of films that did not have much promotion, and we have found some real gems that way. For the price I am very happy with Netflix streaming.
