Makes me wonder what's lying within about 10 feet of dirt of some Austinites right now, never to be discovered. Like, if I could somehow use X-Ray vision to see 10 feet down into my whole yard, would I find any significant fossils?
On the northeast side of town, which was the shore of an ancient sea, there are plenty of fossilized shells-I find them in my yards, and a short walk from my house are undeveloped creekbeds with hundreds of these fossils. Nothing big, as far as I know.
The La Brea tar pits are an amazing place for fossils-and the L.A. County Museum right next to the pits is a good museum. All HornFans should visit there next year when the Horns are playing a game out there.
I grew up in Levelland back in the fifties and sixties. When the city dads were dredging the playa lake next to the football stadium, they uncovered a mammoth skeleton right where the bridge covers the inlet. A couple of geology types from Tech came over to look at it, declared it a treasure, and suggested that it be covered up for protection. That's been about fifty years ago, and to my knowledge,it is still undisturbed.
