HP Touchpad

So, how many HornFans picked up a TouchPad in the firesale? I actually ordered 4 of the 32gb models before the HP announcement. I just received them yesterday. I was able to get them price adjusted. I picked up a couple more in the firesale. They are supposed to arrive tomorrow. I haven't opened any yet. Two will be anniversary presents for my wife and myself next week. I plan to gift one to each of our daughters soon.

I am trying to decide whether to sell the remaining ones or give them to our parents. We just bought laptops for our parents this past Christmas. Both sets of parents are in their early to mid-70's and not very tech savy. However, they are getting the hang of facebook, e-mailing and web browsing. I am not sure if the tablet would confuse them or make things easier. Would I be better off just selling the extras?

For those of you that have TouchPads, what are your thoughts? What are your favorite apps, particularly free or low cost apps?

You’re absolutely right, OakHill. It could be handy for the price, I just wonder about ongoing support and such for a discontinued device but it may be perfectly useful for a good while. My jab is really at HP for not making a serious effort with it, but I think it fell into the Mark Hurd / Leo Apotheker transition and the new CEO wants out of the hardware business. I’m guessing the HP board agrees and the TouchPad was just a casualty.

I hope to see someone take over webOS and do something with it. Palm did really good work there and it seems like there could be a life for it—maybe it will find a home in another device or some consumer appliances. I think there’s a market for another good mobile OS.

I was a little concerned about support, Dionysus. I really don't think that there will be any there. It remains to be seen if H will truly license out webOS. Ideally some other manufacturer could run with it, but I don't really see that happening. I have used Palm devices in the past. There is still a dedicated community of enthusiasts. I am hoping that there wuill still be that support system in place.

The support issue is one of the reasons I am not sure I want to give one of these to the 'rents. I can support my wife and kids fairly well without too much effort. I am not sure about the level of support our parents would require. At least with their laptops/Windows 7, they are around others that can help them out - not so much with the TouchPad and webOS. Would any of you gift/'burden your elderly parents with one of these?

That is why I am wondering about trying to go ahead and try to sell the extras to some geeks out there. I was thinking I might be able to get $250 out each one. It lloks like a bunch of the 16gb versions are actually going for that on ebay. The problem there is that there are thousands of these things listed on ebay. Wondering if I should join the stampede of lemmings posting one there? I am not sure mine would have any visibikity there.

The tablet users here in my small town in AL still use chalk and an eraser. I am a little leery of going the Craigslist route; too many scammers and I would probably have to go an hour into Birmingham. Suggestions anyone?

Shoot, it might become a bit of a collector’s item later on. Probably not big bucks but I could see some ongoing interest since there’s a limited inventory out there. I wouldn’t give one to the parents, for the reasons you mentioned.

Thanks. May look at Craigslist for the extras.

I actually PM'd Katy to see if it would be appropriate to post in the Swap Meet forum, but haven't heard back. Considering the lack of interest in even this thread, that might prove fruitless anyway...

I am anxious to play with one of the TPs I have, but don't want the better half to see I have them yet. Not sure I can wait another week, though.

I will give you 75 bucks and a six pack of beer for one. Each week that goes by I will offer you five bucks less. In time you will owe me money and beer so act now.

Even at $99, it's a waste of money. Tablets are not so much about the hardware as the apps. And the touchpad has none and won't get any.

No and they have not been near my crotch. Whose, I don't know but not mine. I did not sqeeeeeze every cent out of them.

I hope Android works on it and that you get some payoff on them as well as others a pretty good deal. Good luck and keep us posted.

I lost my bid on Amazon even though it said I was going to have it shipped soon.(that was a 32GB for 150$)

I ponied up 245$ + 10$ shipping.

Just got it today. Very nice. I played the flash marketwatch article on it linked just above. Pretty cool.
