How to get cigarette smoke smell out of car

Mrs. Reboot just bought a 2001 4Runner and got a very good deal on it. The only problem is that it used to belong to a smoker and I need to know how to get the smell out. She's had it for a month now and the smell hasn't subsided. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Agree on Fabreeze. Some detail shops have de-ionizers that they can use -- they put this machine in overnight and it gets a lot of the smell out. Don't let them cover it up with some sort of purfume. You should also have your A/C filters changed out (if you have them). Bad news about smoke, though: if it was heavily smoked in, you'll never completely get rid of the smell.

There are some good commercial products for this purpose, there is one made to spray into the vent system, which has its inlet at the base of the windshield. Try one or two of these, and use the vent system on fresh air instead of recirculate whenever you think breathing the road fumes is preferable to the stale smoke in the car.
It may never go totally away, which is why smoker's cars should sell for less than a non-smoker's car.

Light a doobie in your car, that smells a lot better than a cig

If its got the replaceable filter in the a/c , replace it.

Here is the other idea. Put the a/c in the recircle mode where it pull in from the outside. Run it on full blast. Then get a can of Lisole spray, and turn it loose on the intake vent, usually right below the wipers. Let it run for a few.
Couple of days later repeat the process. It will work.

Put a few bait shrimp in a tackle box and let it sit out in the sun for a few weeks. My dad used to get pissed when we did that to our tackle boxes....makes me laugh/ reminisce.

Take a few small balls of this **** and toss it down the vents...

She will be praying for the smell of cigarettes....

more seriously if it's cloth as I assume then you might try sprinkling baking soda all over the place and leaving the car closed over a weekend or something and then vacumn it out.

I doubt you will ever get it out completely...

A trick I have seen detail shops use is to take one of those inserts you use for the plug in Air fresheners and lust put it in the ash tray

Have you considered developing a smoking habit? That might make it less noticable.

Ozium is also a really good air freshener to use, better than Lysol, IMO..

1. Use a carpet/upholstery cleaner.
2. Febreeze
3. Car Fresheners
4. Windows open as much as possible.

Some combination of the above will 'get it out'. Took about 6 mos. in a used Honda I had.
