How Saban gets away with it

Tricky Nick is a master technician on the field and off. He plans and manipulates with the best of them and better than most. Just look at the way he moved up his career ladder, produced winners, told a white lie or two, stepped on a few toes and made a ton of money. I tip my Stetson to him.

Regarding recruiting, he isn't doing anything different from anyone else that looks to fully utilize the system to his advantage.

One aspect that confuses me is "grayshirting". It sounds like a scholarship is promised for the following Spring semester so that the athlete doesn't count against the current year.... so that athlete counts against next year's schollie limit....but when does his 5 year window of eligibility begin? When he comes on campus in the Fall or when he goes on scholarship in the following Spring.

Sooner or later, the numbers catch up and you have to take fewer recruits or have more attrition (early graduations, leave school early, give up scholarship, academic problems...).

My understanding is that scholarships are not guaranteed for any athlete for 4 years. Every year, a scholarship has to be renewed by the athletic department. It is possible that a scholarship is not renewed for a returning player in order to make it available for an incoming hotshot. That would be a pretty low blow and you'd think if it occurred, you would hear some complaints by the athlete on the short end of the stick.

He also managed to get Michigan State on probation or have action taken against them, right? His recruit, aptly named Smoker was a mess to I seem to recall. Saban is shifty. I won't be shocked to see Bama on probation under him. I hope not but I won't be shocked.

100p,

I thought the same but when I checked, Saban took over Michigan State after they were on probation for recruiting infractions that occurred during the previous coach (George Perles).

I guess I should have indicated sarcasm in my post. I think Saban is shady in his career change dealings but regarding recruiting strategy, I think he uses the system to its fullest extent...as he should.

MSU was bidding on Albert Means when Saban was there too. What he's doing now is unlike anything I've ever seen. Oh well; the chickens come home to roost eventually.

Didn't they lose some schloarships for a few years? Maybe they are getting some of them back this year? I don't know, just guessing.

first, i'm a little bummed that anyone on hornfans would post from bleacherreport, a fans only blog. where fans write the articles without any sort of journalistic credibility (which is an oxymoron in and of itself)

still, if you're THAT interested, here's a post I made for another website.....

we need to get as close to 60 to allow for a class of 25,from that list, the seniors drop us to...
76
from juniors, i see MAYBE 6 (Tiffin, PJ, King get one year schollys), Andre goes pro. maybe 2 decide to move on with their careers or something medical we don't know about....
70
from sophmores, I see MAYBE 6 again, good kids who would rather see the field somewhere else or get a medical scholly....
64
so from last years class, we'd need 4 who would rather move on or that have a medical hardship. I'd be interested to know if Neighbors ever got the Bryant scholly.

The kicker is 2010, if we DO somehow move six from the junior group, it'd give us 17 spots open to fill. I could see Saban bumpin that up to 20 MAYBE, but it'll be interesting to see what year he decides to "balance the books" and stop the grey shirting, etc. **This is an assumption that he WOULD have to balance them eventually**

What straws do I need to grasp at? Michigan State bid on Albert Means. That's a fact. If you want specifics, start with Richard Ernsberger Jr's book published 9 years ago that was the first to report it.

they didn't bid, they were told it would cost and walked away.

little bit of difference, but it's there.

NCAA has cleared Brad Lawing of any wrong doing, if you have more to add, please do so
