How Representative Government Works

this is an abomination.

I have long been aware of lobbyists writing much of the legislation. I don't have a major problem with that; can you imagine Sheila Jackson Lee writing legislation?

That with which I DO have a problem is the seclusion. Unless Georgia State Security is being discussed, there's no legitimate reason for these sessions to be closed to credentialed media .. or even identified constituents.

It's part/parcel why a toilet-rating would be an improvement.

Thanks for the link, Musburger

Not sure how old that video is but I was reading articles about ALEC years ago. It is real and it is frightening. Learning about ALEC was probably the final piece of evidence (to me) that our systems corruption was irreparable because anyone within the current system was implicit. It's bad folks, really bad, a system perfectly designed for corporate puppets.

When you think about the TPP, TTIP, and various trade deals under negotiation, its even worse, because you don't even have Congressmen, the supposed representative of the people, involved in the negotiation. You have the same corporate influences working with the executive branches of governments of the various countries and I'm quite certain there are bribes and all kind of nefarious deals. Meanwhile, lobbyists are wining and dining Congressmen to OK these trade deals, but unlike the secret ALEC sessions shown in the video, this time Congress doesn't even know what's in the treaty in which they are being lobbied to pass.

Wrong. Just because they are in the meetings, rather some are, it does NOT mean they know what are in the bill's specifics. They are written by the corp and then mirrored in the legislation. Do you think the legislator writes up the document? No way.

I was giving the legislators the benefit of the doubt; that at least they have the ability to sit in on the meeting or if not in attendance, at least can be briefed by other legislators who were.
But either way, its not what we envisioned growing up as to how laws are passed and who the representatives we vote for actually represent.
