So I'm at the 311 & Snoop Dogg concert last weekend and I ask my wife...

"How much do you think Snoop and 311 are actually making from playing tonight?"

We figure that their were 8000 people there x $55 a ticket = $440,000.

Obviously, a few of those tickets were comps.

How much did Snoop Dogg take home from that 1 performance?

In general, what do good bands get for playing concerts?

Really depends on what type of contract (night to night or tour) they are working on. However as a general rule take out $35-50k for the building rental and the hope is that will cover the guarantee to the artist. If the show goes into "percentage" that means the take is greater than the guarantee. Generally to artist will get 85 to 90% of the gross after payment of the rent on the building.

The promoter is the one who gets squeezed when things go south.

Concert tours are how musicans get rich.

Most artists don't really take home that much money from their album sales.

A lot of the money going into the artist's pocket comes from the merchandise tables and not the turnstiles.

a lot of top acts will only play for a set amount plus a percentage of ticket sales. this is what dictates the price of the ticket. in 2000 a perfect circle was paid $200,000 for each concert and a percentage of ticket sales. this is on top of merch sales most of which there is direct profit.

I was wondering this but with the smaller acts. Take a James McMurtry show for instance. Typically $15 to $20 dollars for a ticket and he will pull in a decent crowd at Threadgills or Gruene hall. How much is he making doing this? Does he get any of the beer sales?

Flaco,
I think for those smaller type artists they are generally on a set amount per gig. Lets take some of the people past their prime who are still gigging as an example. Billy Idol for instance at this point charges between 55-75k for a cocnert and plays place like the 5k capacity Verizon Wireless theatre. The promotor would rent the building and take whatever is above the 55-75 that Billy gets. Not bad work if you can get it.
