How Much Better?

Season looking very good. Cruising along unbeaten, averaging 74 points a game, beating opponents by 15-20...oh, wait, that was last year, too. You may recall that the 2012 Horns actually went 5-0 at the start of the year against weaker opponents; then a strong UCLA team trounced us 62-42, and after that the wheels came off. The PAC 12 comes earlier this year. Let's see how we do against Stanford.
For the record, I am a member of the chorus that thinks the team is much improved over last year, and I expect us to do better. But its too early to tell. The key, again, is the guards. So far they are shooting better than last year, especially beyond the arc. The team cooled off against New Mexico State, and only hit two of 12 threes, but the season percentage is a respectable .357. Rodrigo's offensive improvement has been prodigious, though she only played 13 minutes and took only one shot against New Mexico State. When she can stay out of foul trouble, Davenport has looked very strong; and Henderson adds more offensive variety. We haven't been playing good teams, so at this early stage stats can be deceptive. But the players ALL look better---quicker, stronger, with better passing and shooting. I won't be too disappointed if Stanford beats us in a respectable game. I will be bummed if we get blown out again. Stanford will be an early indicator of our potential. They have the size to battle with us under the basket. Our guards will have to produce.

Your commentary sort of implies the wheels came off because we played stiff/PAC12 competition and were exposed. The first loss happened because the injury bug hit us big time...Chaz was not 100% for UCLA and I think Cokie was already plagued as well IIRC. The injuries mounted from there and just continued to get worse. If this team can get the two freshman healthy and go in the right direction healthwise, I definitely see huge improvement over last year. I don't like injuries as an excuse but in a league like the Big 12 you need depth to compete.

I agree we need good guard play but having a stable of guards to push each other in practice will be beneficial as opposed to last year when we had to make due with who was healthy.

This is a question we'll have a better answer to six games from now, considering we face Stanford, the ags and Tennessee during that stretch. I really think we need to win one of the first two, which certainly seems doable this season. And we face the Cardinal at home, and get a&m on a neutral court, so that should work in our favor as well. If we can win at least one of those three, and avoid any blowouts, I'll feel good about where we're at. Well one blowout would okay so long as we wipe up the court with the ags

. I do think a few signature wins would really help this team build confidence heading into Big 12 play, and will certainly help our post-season chances if we're in the mix come tourney selection time. But so far, based on three early contests, we look good and have improved in some key areas. Now let's get after it and beat Stanford!

Don't forget that in addition to the injuries, not just to the players but a couple of others that could have provided experience and depth (Tiffany Moore & Chelsea Bass) left BB due to health/injuries as Cokie did eventually. Trying to learn a new offense and get used to new teammates proved extremely difficult last season.

This season, although the results are similar to date, you can see that those frosh are more relaxed, understand the schemes better, are playing more than thinking about the next step in the play with the result that the offense and defense are both improved.

The upcoming three games with Stanford, A&M & Tenn will give us a better picture of where this squad is. Although I do not expect to lose all three (a possibility), I do expect much better games from the Horns than they provided in last season's big out of conference games. Realistically, we certainly have a good chance to win 2 of 3 as overseas pointed out. I do expect the team to be in the game and to be close enough to have a chance to win if not be leading towards the end.

OK. I don't think we will win any of the next three. We will get out coached and the talent is simply better. We will learn our lessons and they will prepare us for the Big 12. After each game I hope they study each play and learn how to do it better for the next game. After each game I want them to do better the next game.

I hope they are practicing MULTIPLE offensive sets and how to move the ball around and score. We are going to need POINTS POINTS POINTS if not these defenses are going to eat our lunch.

HOOK'EM HORNS!

Yes overseas that's what I was referring to, "Stanford, a&m and Tennessee are three of our next six".

thanks for the clarificationl.
