how many recruits are we taking this year?

according to the roster, we only have 13 senior scholarship players. We already have 13 commits. I think it's safe to say, we will take more (not sure how early). Any thoughts?

7 to 9 seems like a lot of attrition to me.

I wonder what that does to recruiting strategy regarding some of the studs we have offered. There are several you need to take but you have to protect yourself in case your actual attrition is less than expected. I know a scholarship is only issued for 1 year at a time but I don't want UT to start yanking them from athletes that have been with the program, worked hard and are in good academic standing just to allow room for the next "great" thing.

Mack and Co. have worked this out each year and I don't expect any different this time around.

Don't forget that Tevin Jackson will re-enroll and will count as a scholarship assuming he is given one for the upcoming season. He is not listed on the current roster. This may impact the scholarships available for 2012.

Blaine Irby's scholarship for 2012 season, if he decides to play, would be a Medical Hardship scholarship and not count toward the 85 limit.....to the best of my knowledge.

I keep hearing the numbers 22-25 from those who report on recruiting i.e. the usual suspects. It would seem that attrition is expected to be high going into next year.

I would think that attrition will be very high compared to normal years. Players who aren't seeing much playing time and don't like the new coach at their position will be more likely to leave this year. At least that would be my guess.

thanks for the feedback and insight. i agree attrition might be unusually high this year given the staff turnover. the new coaches might want players that fit their systems. the players that don't fit, might see the writing on the wall if they aren't getting playing time.

The usual. Get 35 commits and sign 23.

Based on some things I have read I believe a lot more is being expected of the players in terms of fittness and summer workouts.

I'd be surprised, with the anticipated drop outs, if we take less than 25 in this year's recruiting class. If that's the case, we're more than halfway there, with plenty of room for the late bloomers and late deciders.

I stand corrected. Horns11 is correct. A Medical Hardship scholarships does count against the annual 85 limit. What was I thinking!

That makes it even harder to bring in a large 2012 class. In my opinion, that would be a good trade if Irby can contribute this year and next.
