How low is the Guadalupe?

A few of us are tubing on July 4 and we are either going to tube up above Gruene or we are going to tube from Gruene down.

The plus of tubing above Gruene is that you don't cross into New Braunfels city limits and in turn don't need to worry about the stupid cooler laws. That being you can only have a 16 quart cooler.

The negative is that above Gruene is where it seems to get low first. That means likely walking in some parts.

Along those lines, for those that have tubed from Gruene down recently, how low is it from Rockin' R to Cypress Bend? Any walking or still doing alright?

Also who do you guys recommend renting from to start out by where Rockin' R is at Gruene? I think that we might try to buy our own 16 quart coolers (I have one) rather than using theirs.

I went three weeks ago and tubed from gruene to cyprees, about 4-5 hours, no walking.

there is a website that will tell you the flow, dont feel like looking it up for you though, sorry

i went saturday. no walking on the float we took. i'm not sure where they put us in, but it was the longest trip from Gruene (5-6 hours). water wasn't low. in fact, the chute was steady ******* people up all day long. one after another.

We are going tubing period. The question is do we go up river from Gruene or start at Gruene and go down.

You should be good to go for the 4th. The link below has the river flow info.

River Flow

Last time, we did the long float at River Sport Tubes by the horseshoe and it took about 5 hours.

I would recommend though floating around the horseshoe because it is really nice to avoid those cooler rules.

Have fun! Maybe I’ll be floating out there as well that day.

This will be the best advice you ever got for floating the river. I've been toobing almost 20 years now. That stretch from Rock'n R to Gruene is miserable, will never float that stretch again. By far the best stretch is to get your toobs at )Mountain Breeze (also prob. the best place to camp) and get in at Lazy L&L.

This float gives you so many more options than Rock'n R to Gruene, which has 1 stop no telling how long after you put in. The first stretch at L&L is slow, unless they drop you at the end of this slow stretch, just before devil's playground (first stretch of faster water). But I like this first stretch of slow water because it allows your group to get in, eventually work to get your floatilla on, and get your drink on. After about 45 minutes or less if you paddle you get to devil's playground, a nice stretch of non-dangerous rapids.

After DP, there's another slower stretch to re-group and get your drink on. THen there's the most dangerous part of this leg, "Bad Rock", which is less dangerous than Huaco Falls and Slumber Falls on the lower half. This is a nice fast rapid, get through that, re-group. get your drink on, then you have a stop to look forward to, Rocky Beach. This is about the midway point. Get a sausage on a stick, frito pie, turkey leg, and a tollhouse ice cream cookie, perhaps more beer and Ice. Those fed up can find a way beck to MB. Finish filling your belly, get back on and finish the trip with slow/moderate/fast stretches.

Another great part about this stretch, other than Rocky Beach, is you can get out when you get to Mountain Breeze, or if you're having too much fun, you can stay on and go another 2 1/2 or 3 hours through the chute and get off at Bezdeks, and catch a shuttle to MB.

I would highly recommend this. This biggest complaint I hear is "I was on the river for like 9 hours!" This stretch is broken up nicely and gives you the opportunity to be on the river for 9 hours, if you want to, not because you are forced to.

I think Bezdeks may put you in at MB. I really like the Lazy L&L to Mountain breeze with the option to go to Bezdeks and the chute. If the river is higher, I think you can even go past Bezdeks to another take out back to MB.

MB to Bezdeks, is ok, the chute is fun, don't go over the waterfall on the right. I just like the pace of L&L to possibly Bezdeks.

I floated the Guadalupe the 2nd weekend in June. How low was is? Pretty damn low (around 200 cfs). But did we have fun? Hell yes, its fun every single time. But don't poon out and float some other part of the river. Be a man and start at the 1st crossing (rockin r) and float down to Gruene. It may take 8 hours or a little more and a little paddling, but that's where the people and the fun are. Also, that's where the best rapids are, and that's what makes tubing fun.

Love the float from Lazy L&L. Been twice this year so far and started up by Sattler at Whitewater and the Shanty. It's a nice float too but Lazy L&L/Bezdeks is my favorite. Never done Rockin R to Gruene!

I have done Bezdek's (3rd crossing to 2nd). I have done Huaco Falls (2nd crossing to 1st). I have done Rockin' R 1st crossing to Gruene Bridge. I have done Rockin' R Gruene Bridge to Cypress Bend.

My favorite is Bezdek's IF the water is going. Otherwise, you have some spots you have to walk in.

If it is low, we are considering going from Gruene Bridge to Cypress but that also entails using the stupid new cooler laws.

TheFied - you should try Lazy L&L to Bezdeks. Or L&L to Mountain Breeze if the water is low because you have the option to keep going to Bezdek's if you're not beaten down.

I've toobed L&L to the 2nd crossing and I didn't think from Bezdeks to the 2nd crossing had much to offer other than more toob time, which is okay when you're floating at around 700 cfs and you're not ready to get out.

It is correct, most people do 1st crossing to Gruene, that's the other reason not to do that stretch, way too many people. Don't get me wrong, the people are part of what's fun about the river, but too many people suck. Plus, if you go with beginners, they'll never toob again because right when you get in, you hit Huaco Falls and somebody will bite it there and loose a cooler or something. Not a great way to start a 6-9 hour float...

I miss the river...Paul, the owner at Mountain Breeze is greatness as well, have known him from about when he bought it 18 years ago or so. He's built so much into that camp. Its great because you're not camping right along the road as its offset from River Road, has a bar, pool table, volleyball and a lot of overflow camping I've luckily never had to camp in during holiday weekends.
