How long do you leave your dog inside?

So ever since school started I have had to leave my dog by himself inside from 7am to 5pm. He is not in a crate so he has plenty of room to get comfortable, and always has water, and is pretty well house trained, so he never pisses inside. I think 10 hours without pissing is a long stretch, but it s what I have do do. I wish I didn't. So I was just wondering how long some of you leave your dogs inside, either in a crate or not.

Usually, 7 am-6pm in a crate. He goes in the crate when I start brushing my teeth. The last thing I do before I leave. Sometimes it might be 10-11PM before I get home, no problems. Black lab, on occasion, I may miss the latch or just plain forget to lock it. He will either be right by the front door when I get home, or in his kennel.

When he was young and I was against the Kennel he would **** right by the door where I go in and out of, those were the puppy years.

For reasons that I would prefer to not speak about, he has spent about 48 hours straight in a kennel, no problems.

I put fresh sod in my back yard and put my house on the market so my two boxers have been staying in crates all day. 6:45 to 5:30 usually. I hate it, but they seem to be ok. The realtor say's they whine a little when she come in, and that breaks my heart, but I don't really have much choice right now. I can't have them destroying the house or the back yard.

When I move they will go back to being outside all day.

long time - it's been 12 hours or more for DJ. He's not in a crate, but he used to be. We try and keep it under 10 hours for bathroom reasons ...

I don't crate my dog if I don't have to...and she has the run of the house during the day...I try to make it home right after work or shortly thereafter...10 hours is the usual...but I have had fairly good luck with my dogs once they are house-broken...not many accidents at all...I think they get used to it. I do have a crate for her...and she sleeps in it during the day even if I am there so I know she feels good about it.

i work from home, so my dogs are just about never alone. when i was in nyc i would leave him home for about 8 hrs. he was depressed and gained some weight. thankfully we left. he can hold it forever. when it rains, he refuses to go out unless he absolutely has to go. he's never had a problem, so i tend to trust he'll go to the door when he wants out. the other one wants out in the middle of the day to go lay in the sun (black lab). she gets so hot, i don't understand it.

i don't like people crating all day, but i really don't like people leaving their dog outside all day with no relief. texas is not a place for a full time outside dog. wife's friend went to babysit this summer and the couple had a dog that was an outside dog. she said it was so sad, they have no grass (all dead) and had no water out for the dog. she went out and spent time with it. said it was filthy. turns out the dog died that next weekend, they claimed 'old age'. i told my wife that girl should consider how good of friends they are.

On occasion I've gone out for a HH beer, ended up with some strange and coming home early the next morning without any issue. 12 to 15 hours, I'm guessing.

Some horrible stories on here.

I never crate trained my dog but she is an apt dog.
It sucks to think that she sits home all day...8:00am ---> 5:30 or 6:30.

But what else can I do?

I am sure she just sleeps and I leave the blinds open so she can look out the window.

She loves laying on the patio when I get home but I don't know if I should leave the door open during the day for her to go out on it.

She barks very rarely when she is out there.

We leave our dogs outside all day. They have shade, and a self-refilling water bowl. Never had a problem, and they're very healthy. We're lucky though, because we have plenty of shade and a covered patio so they can get out of the rain.

I don't think leaving them outside is mean. Yes, it gets hot, but they're fine. When they're outside, they can chase squirrels, bark at people walking by, etc. Inside they'd have nothing to do.

But, the answer to the original question... my big dog can go a good 14 hours and be just fine. She'll throw up before she pees in the house. The pup is still going out fairly often. She makes it a good 8 hours through the night, and is starting to last longer.

9 to 10 hours. She can do more, I guess, if I had to but I don't let anything occur that would take that long. If I am doing something that she cannot partake in and I am away for too long, I will drop what I am doing and head home for her. She "eliminates" in the morning and does not get food to just sit all day.

Dogs love to sleep. They avg. about 18 hours if they can, maybe more. Mine is kept in the kitchen as she is too crafty and curious compared to my former dog. This dog keeps me on my toes.

Exactly. Crates are not punishment or for quiet time. In the wild a dog will seek refuge in a crate type enclosure. Sometimes when a dog does something wrong it will head to the crate. It is not that it kows it is to be punished, it just feels safe there.

I have a JRT. I work from home but travel a lot.

When I'm on the road, my dog is free to roam the common areas of the house but she's also been crate trained. My neighbors walk her w/ their dogs when I'm gone and let her out a couple of times a day. She's never had a potty accident and hasn't chewed up anything....ever. I got pretty lucky w/ her.

Even w/ a free run of the house, she almost always ends up laying down in her crate. If properly crate trained, dogs view the crate as a safe haven.

My dog is usually by herself for 8-10 hours while I’m at work. Sometimes she is alone longer if I have an event at night; however, I try not to leave her alone that long.

I keep her inside; I pretty much have to since she is only 2 lbs. I don’t want her to get eaten or attacked or lost outside. The great thing about her is that she is litter box trained. She has those doggie pads in a box that she uses if needs to until I can take her outside. She is great with that, so I never have to worry. When she was a puppy, I had her in a crate, but was able to take her out every few hours luckily. Now, she just roams in my room throughout the day. She has her food, water, and a box full of certain toys she can play with while I’m out. Funny thing is that when I get home each night, she has all her toys out everywhere. She loves to play on her own and seems pretty fine when I’m gone.

I do agree with the statement that some dogs actually like their crate. My parent’s terrier can roam freely around the house, but always seems to end up back in his crate on his own.

man i hope you people have big *** crates. i couldn't imagine letting my lab sit in a crate for 8-10 hours everyday.

yeah, i know she would be fine. but if i'm gonna be gone for more than 2 or 3 hours i just let her roam around the apartment. 9 times out of 10 she won't piss or crap, and if she does it's not a big deal.
