HOW IS THE JUMP STOP NOT TRAVELING?

Okay.......to simplify.....if I am dribbling at the half line walking towards the top of the key unguarded and I do the jump step move unguarded....................................is it a travel.?

Yes..........all day , every day. I allow it if the player picks the ball up and immediately jumps with both feet , lands on both feet and then disposes of the ball by whatever means. Anything else is a travel.
The violation being, almost no player can do this without a skip step or a two step. Immediate whistle.
 
My point was not incorrect. I merely said Stat's first rulin was incorrect, which has become commonly accepted on the thread. Let it go, you are wrong.
 
Ok, I will post this again. If you are dribbling YOU HAVE TO JUMP OFF OF BOTH FEET AT THE SAME TIME AND LAND ON BOTH FEET AT THE SAME TIME for it to be a legal jump stop. You can not take a step before or after the jump. You can not pivot after the jump stop. The two steps that you get are in the jump. That's why you have to leave off two, and land on two.

Now, when you use a jump stop to catch a pass you can jump off of one foot and still pivot after the catch, off of either foot ,as long as you catch the ball in the air.

I coach HS basketball and have talked to refs about this numerous times. I actually teach the jump stop for various reasons. I have also worked various college camps were the jump stop was taught.
 
Yeah, 3ball, for some reason basically nobody payed attention to your first post. Not sure why, since it was easily the most accurate and concise version of the ruling so far on the thread.
 
yeah, the jump off both feet thing for sure is not required.... while it would be a legal jumpstop as well, the most common jumpstop that i see is off of one foot, landing on two. here is the rule that i found, and it is in line with what stat says and what i said.

Section 42. Jump Stop. Art. 1. A jump stop is executed when a player catches the ball while moving or dribbling with: a. One foot on the playing court, jumps off that foot and lands simultaneously on both feet (no pivot foot). b. Two feet off the playing court, lands on one foot, jumps off that foot and lands simultaneously on both feet (no pivot foot). Art. 2. A jump stop may also be executed when the dribbler has one foot on the playing court, initiates a jump off that foot, ends the dribble with both feet off the playing court and lands simultaneously on both feet (either foot can be established as the pivot foot).
 
That's all great.....I'm telling you what officials call. I coach in Houston and have been told by officials they call a travel if you don't jump off two and land on two. When I coached in Waco and Dallas I was told the same thing. Hell, I have witnessed them call it that way.

If you take a step and then jump and land, that is 3 steps. If you then pivot afterwards that is 4 steps. If you jump off of two feet and land on two feet, that's 2 steps. Then, if you pivot that is 3. But hey WTF do I know?

I guarantee that if you are on a fast break and you pick the ball up, take a step, jump off that one foot, and do a jump stop it will get called a travel.
 
HS Girl's Bball coach here. We teach the jumpstop to all of our girls.

Here's the reason why it's not illegal....

The one foot you take off of also happens at the same time you take your last dribble. When you pick up that last dribble, you are essentially just stopping/landing on 2 feet...therefore you have either foot to pivot on.

I agree with that because the ball hasn't been picked up yet. You are stepping, then picking the ball up, then doing the jump stop. You are basically leaving off both feet at the same time, they just aren't side by side. I'm saying that if you are dribbling, and you pick the ball up, you can not then take a step and jump stop. If you are dribbling and you pick the ball up, you have to leave off two, and land on two.
 
but 3ball, that is the same thing we've been saying. read my post above. if you are a right handed shooter going towards the goal, you would jump off you right foot (at the same time as picking up your dribble) and then land on two feet.
 
Anything other than what I previously said 3-4 posts back is traveling.

The ball must be touching the floor as you take off of 1 foot with your last dribble. Then you pick up that last dribble as you land on 2 feet.
