What does it really buy you?
Adds that have doubtful impact. I can't imagine someone being undecided and they watch some 30 second piece of propaganda and now suddenly they know who they want to vote for.

I saw a headline that Romney is raising money in California which seems like a waste of his time at this juncture. But maybe raising money for buying add blitzes in battleground states is not a bad strategy.

Money is necessary for advertisement targeted toward swing voters. Candidates know there is only a small percentage of the population susceptible to being influenced by a commercial, but that small percentage is what wins elections.

Right now, the Presidential election is too close to call. If Obama were to win Florida, he most likely would win the election. If Florida has say, 5 million voters, maybe at this point only 200,000 of them are up for grabs. If most of those 200,000 vote for Obama, he probably wins.

Below is a link to a video of what I think is an example of an ad with the potential to be quite effective for Obama. I have no idea as to its validity. The emphasis isn't on policy, the economy, energy, or Afghanistan. Instead, the ad focuses on character and perception. An aging school teacher from small town Craig, Colorado describes a meeting with Romney with soft piano music playing in the background. Watch the ad and tell me if you think it might be effective.

Link.
