Just how good is new Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp?
He'll need to be really good to get the most out of a Longhorn defense that has struggled in pass coverage over the last two seasons. Muschamp, coming over from Auburn, has been a winner everywhere he's been, espousing a frenetic, aggressive style of defense that's designed to create havoc, pressure and turnovers. Texas wasn't exceptional in any one of those areas a year ago, making the timing of the hire most opportune. The program is in danger of losing more ground to rival Oklahoma unless the running game quickly replaces Jamaal Charles and some newcomers step up in the receiving corps, but the defense is expected to be far better. Thank Muschamp for that.
 
The way the front seven will play, I think will be the difference. A new kind of play will come off the down linemen and the linebackers.

If that happens as I think it will, then the timing and decisions in the backfield of opponents will not be what it has been the past two seasons.

From there, the Horns defensive backfield takes on a new look. From what I read about August practices, we could have close to two starting lineups in D-Backs. I think there are at least 8 who could play even with one another. The other day I was reading about them and found it hard to want any of them on the sidelines. The list didn't even put Curtis Brown very high on the charts, and I think he may be one of the best players in that group.

I have my hopes this defense will remind me of OU's defense in 01 and 02. I remember some of those RRS games where the OU players were so fast and aggressive it was like the game was played on the other side of the line all afternoon. Meaning, over on our side of the line. The ball would snap and nothing but OU jerseys from sideline to sideline, running down the ball and ball carrier.

I fully expect to see that kind of play from the Horns. Relentless. Without stop. Sixty minutes.
 
Muschamp must feel like he won the lottery, with the level of talent he gets to work with in the defense. I just know the defense is going to be special at some point this year, I just hope it's soon.
