How far are you OBLIGATED to take the 'Horns?

I posed this question to a friend of mine:

How far are you obligated to take your own team? Let me give you a scenario. I have several Soldiers who are from Ohio (some t-shirt fans, some legit), and I have told them that they MUST take the Buckeyes all the way because if you have a top three-seeded team, you MUST show appropriate fandom and faith...no matter what.

That being said, what about when your team is an 8 seed? I recall having the 'Horns beat Nevada (I think) a few years ago and then losing in the second round. We, of course, lost to Nevada in a pitiful effort, but my bracket wasn't much the worse for wear.

I'm planning on taking us over Wake, and a part of me just wants to move us all the way to the Elite 8, but perhaps that will mean I'm just making a donation.

Thoughts?

Couldn't disagree more. You pick the matchups objectively. If you think your team is going to lose, such as anybody who knows anything about basketball should between KU and tOSU, then you pick it that way. Is Pittsburgh supposed to go all the way because they are a top 3 seed despite playing more like an 8 seed? They have no chance against any of the top few teams.

GoHorns, you say that, but what if your a buckeye fan, you pick KU, and then your bucks beat KU? Don't you feel like a douche? Yeah, your team won but you had no faith. Reminds me of the "cell-phone flop out" at the Big 12 Champ game that is one of the all-time hornfan classics.

No I don't, because I still made the decision based on what I know from the course of the season. The difference between tOSU and KU is pretty vast. I just don't feel obligated to make picks like a homer, even if they are mildly realistic. And I especially don't feel like a douche.

I expect the Horns to get run out of the gym against Kentucky (who I'll probably have all the way to the FF). Should the Horns win, I could care less how it destroys my bracket. I'll fill out my bracket with my head, but watch the games with my heart, that's my obligation to my team.

Well said Tower and Flask. A Horns win as a big upset is waaay better than my bracket-success. Sadly, my bracket will have Kentucky....

There is definitely a little insanity if a) people are stating they hope for a first round loss to avoid a second round embarrassment, and b) people are asking whether they have to bet on Texas to go all the way.

Easy solution. You make one bracket with Texas going to the Final 4 or winning it all, and then a second more realistic bracket.

That is usually what I do, but this year the I am picking Texas to beat Wake and lose to Kentucky in all of my brackets.

We really could not have asked for a better first round match up than Wake. They are about the only team (with a pulse) in the tournament that has been worse over the past 1-2 months than we have.

Kentucky will crush Texas by 20 points, I am sorry to say. We have nobody that can guard John Wall and Cousins will have a field day with an over-matched Pittman. The Patterson/James match-up will be cool to watch while the game is still in question though.

To anyone considering placing money on the Horns, I suggest just donating it to a worthy charity instead. That way everybody wins.

That was pre-first year of college Wall vs. pre-first year of college Bradley. I don't think there is any question their college careers have started out drastically different. Bradley has appeared to let his offensive uncertainty/woes affect his defense. Wall has just gotten better and better.

Either way, would love to see them go at it again and see how they match up. I just fear I already know the answer.
