Ancient Philosophical Paradigm: Individualism VS Collectivism

The American Constitution is being torn up (Along with the Bill of Rights) in the USA. It is being ignored and its tenets being broken by our government with the passage of laws and congressional acts very frequently and at a more rapid pace in the preceding years. There are countless examples of this, including the conspicuous Patriot Act, the best known (but not least damaging) among them.

We feel just as free and at liberty to do what we want in this nation as before, but, under the law, we certainly are not. Regarding the law, we are, in fact, being oppressed and our rights and privacy being stripped away. These aren't reported on by the TV but this news is out there in plain sight in the form of government documents on public record that one can even read on government websites.

You may think that Individualism and Collectivism are defined as simply as they sound. But there is much depth and breadth to these ancient ideologies. It explains a means by which even a benevolent government with the best intentions can sour into something not just oppressive, but tyrannical. Such is the path in which the USA is headed and it was made possible when we went from an Individualist society and culture as a nation to that of collectivism. Meaning a malleable society more susceptible to the pains of government corruption.

Excellent post, could not agree more. One of the most useful remedies to TRY to head off this problem is to quit feeding the beast. Cut, Cap, & Balance is a good first step toward that but we have a long, long way to go. Printing money to fund new instrusions is just wrong on so many levels.

It doesn't help that we have a rogue President who ignores the laws that Congress does pass and effectively creates his own laws by ordering the Justice Dept, ICE, etc to execute Presidential directives instead of the law of the land.

He's done this with the Defense of Marriage Act. He's done it by directing ICE to act as if the Dream Act had been passed by Congress. He's done it by not enforcing the borders. He's done it by continuing the war in Libya past 90 days without Congressional Approval. He's done it by operating without a budget, etc. etc. etc.

He's just sitting up on Mt. Olympus regally above the law

BI's point is valid, but really it is just confirming the original post of the OP. Each administration seems to take us at least one step farther from the freedom we once had. Mind you, it is usually with good intentions, but the consequence are just more intrusions (naturally more taxes) and less freedom.

Don't forget the new rules coming out of the NRLB. Obama knew he couldn't get it through Congress even with control of both houses so he's basically instituting card check by rule.

freedom we once had

Yes, the days before the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 19th Amendment, the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act, Loving, Lawrence, ...

But, hey - that's not "freedom."

I suppose we should just take Clayton Williams' advise and just relax and enjoy airport groping. It makes us safer, after all.

BI,
I agree with you and really only remember back to Regan as President. I have studied back a bit of Carter, and on back, but don't have personal memories of them.
I would suggest that if you traced back the memories about Presidential over steps, you can find a great history of them, including going back to Jefferson and his frets about the Constitutionality of the Louisiana Purchase.
I do believe you will find the inception of major harm done to the Constitution from the office of President lies with FDR. FDR, by serving 3 terms had one massive power granted to him; the appointment of SCOTUS. SCOTUS history has forever been shaped by FDR, and if you look at the history of court rulings and the precedents set, you will find many lasting effects from his 12 years of appointment to SCOTUS. SCOTUS was basically his. This is something that was a weakness I believe. I don't think any president should be able to put such a powerful stamp on SCOTUS.
So to answer you, Bush was as bad as Obama really. I think the Patriot Act was bad in it's overreach of power. What will get us is not that someone all of a sudden breaks entirely from the Constitution, but it has been a constant eroding for almost a century.

Tyranny is what socialists progress. Hence their love fest with the terms 'Progress' and 'Progressive'. Tyranny is the pot of gold at the end of their socialist rainbow.
