This stuff is killing me! I'll find sites that say they get rid of stuff, I download it, it runs a scan, and right before I can delete the hundreds of hidden programs it says I have to buy something. I thought there was free stuff for this.

Somebody please help me!

Strictly spyware (malware, crapware) huh? There are at least 4 programs you need to cover the spectrum - all of which are free:

1. Ad-aware
2. Bazooka
3. Hijack
4. CWSshredder

All four of these clean up different types of spyware and crapware and browser hijacks. Google each one and you'll hit their websites for a free download.

So far, no one company has come forward with a complete solution suite to address all of the malicious attacks and hacks out there .... that's why you need at least the 4 above. You can also add Spybot to the list as a good one.

You should also read some of the advisories on the web sites you will visit above - and understand how and why you get infected and hijacked. Keep in mind also that your firewall won't stop it and virus protection won't prevent it. Spyware is a completely separate animal and therefore needs a separate solution(s)

Yes - it is called Hijack This, thanks.

GOO - lemme guess ... you downloaded and installed Napster, Kazaa, Gator, and Grokster. And you click on all the "click here" buttons on pop-ups.

btw GOO - you have to change the picture in your sigline. It is distracting and hard to concentrate .... I am referring to the GOO part with the eyes.

I didn't find the Mozilla Firefox browser to be any faster than Internet Explorer. It just loads web pages in a different way. Both core engines are roughly about the same speed in completing a web page download. The features that are built-in into the browser are nothing extraordinary. The only thing I liked about the browser was the download manager. You can add on the fact it can't display certain web pages correctly (that sucks in an aggy type way).

Let me disspell the myth that the Gecko engine (inside Firefox) is more secure than I.E. All software has security flaws. Gecko-rendering based browsers are more secure, because less people use them. You think a typical hacker spends his days finding exploits on programs that less than 5% or the world population uses? There is the myth that the Gecko engine is immune to spyware. This is false as well. Though the nature of the Gecko does seem not to pick up certain spyware, it is not completely immune to it. If you want features in a browser, get a I.E. such as MyIE2, Avant Browser, or Slimbrowser, and download all up critical updates from Microsoft Windows Update.

I HATE spyware, thanks fer the suggestions.

Sii -

I use Avant, but I have Firefox too and check it out every so often. What I've found is that some websites do not show properly using FF. Slightly irritating and maybe minor, but the problem is you may never be sure that FF is showing correctly or incorrectly.

This is what I've heard. Avant (using the iE engine) is a complete browser with all the extensions built-in basically. It's very stable - and everyone builds their websites with IE in mind. FF on the other hand is a stripped down browser ... but (the caveat) FF doesn't build the extensions. Instead FF relies on the Open Source geeks to build the extensions that extend the capabilities. This gets gnarly when the geeks write extension code that conflicts with one another, since they are not working in a single project. Some extensions even conflict enough to disable other extension code.

Seen anything like this using FF?

I wouldn't recommend Hijack This to anyone who's not familiar with the registry. You have to go through the list it provides and pick what you want to delete.
