How do I find out if this is a scam or not?

I will be going to brazil later this year and have made all the necessary reservations except for one in Amazon. I had planned on staying at the Amazonat lodge (http://www.amazonat.org/) which was recommended in Frommer's travel guide. Everything seemed fine till I read the part where they stated that to guarantee my reservation, they needed 50% as down payment in to their bank account. The account is with Wachovia in NC and account is in the name of Intercapital B.V which is a business based out of netherlands.

Is there a way to find out if this is legit?

Have you checked the forums on Trip Advisor or Virtual Tourist? Just search for your destination; chances are someone has stayed there.

FWIW, a B&B we stayed at in Costa Rica had a similar deposit policy; we had to put down the deposit to a bank account in Miami. It was all legit.

a place I recently stayed at in Tulum required a 50% deposit, no biggie

I did post this on one of the travel forums and I got a response saying it's a nice place, no mention of the payment policy. Didn't trust posters on there as much as here. I've seen many threads there started by rival lodges pretending to be fellow tourists dissing their competition.

Anyway, this place legit enough. Thanks again.
