How do I connect my computer to DSL?

I'm getting a new computer for college, and the dorm has DSL. Do I just need a regular LAN card to hook up to it, or do I need someting special like you do for a cable connection. If you do need a LAN card, is it worth investing some significant money buying a topnotch one to increase speed? Thanks!

Shouldn't need anything other than a regular Ethernet card. Since DSL has a max speed of about 8mbps, a 10/100 card is all you need. Gigabit would be a waste of money unless you're looking to build a gigabit network (can't see why you would).

What kind of computer are you getting? I think most new ones come with integrated Ethernet on the motherboard. If not, check outThe Link

Ethernet=LAN card right?

I'm getting a AMD-64 3000+ from a company called Ibuypower. It does have a 10/100 LAN onboard, but as I will eventually be at UT, with their godly OC3 network, shouldn't I go with the fastest network card I can find?

and yes, ethernet card = LAN card.

10/100 means 10 upload and 100 download.

UT resnet is capped at 10mbps, so cards faster than that probably wont do you any good.

business school and some of the labs arent capped on bandwidth though.
