How do I background check a potential renter?

We're renting our house on our own for the first time.

I will contact the applicant's previous landlords and place of employment but what else can I do to find out if they are a risk or not?

What are my resources?

I use a realtor to handle finding tenants and doing background checks. Of course, it costs me 3/4 of the first month's rent.
