How about Blues on the Green?

The Shady Grove thread inspired me to ask...

I'm planning on going tomorrow evening to see Ruthie Foster but I've never been to one. Do a lot of people usually come to these? How early should I expect to get there if it starts @ 7:30?

I just found out we're going tomorrow. If they think I'm sitting out in Zilker Park in that heat without beer, they're nuts. I'll be reasonably subtle, but beyond that . . .

if you want to get close show up 30 minutes early. I imagine there will be a good crowd for Ruthie. we always arrive at show time and find a roomy spot in the outskirts. i've never had a problem bringing beer. just bring cans, a koozie, chill and enjoy the music, and pick up you trash and you'll be fine. parking is a ***** but i just walk to zilker from my house.

saw ruthie at the kerrville folk fest this past weekend. I have some CDs and they are decent, but she's badass live, especially at night at the kerrville folk festival.

enjoy.

Unless you're really big on seeing the band up close, then it really doesn't matter when you get there. You can hear the show no matter where you are, so don't sweat it.

I went to all of them last year, and there's no issue with bringing alcohol, etc... you don't even need to be sneaky about it, just considerate.

I live within walking distance, so I've never had to deal with parking, but I hear you can park at Zilker for $3.

As someone else said, sometimes there are 1,000+ people and sometimes nowhere near that.

Don't worry about getting there early unless you really really really want to sit near the stage. You can hear the music really well from anywhere in that area of the park.

Some friends & I are going tonight, we usually sit toward the edge near the sand volleyball courts... it was a good spot all last summer.

Wow that was a really nice evening. There were a LOT of people there... I'd guess a few thousand? And there were a ton of dogs there- I ended up taking both of mine and we couldn't look 5 feet in any direction without coming into contact with other dogs. Everyone was very nice, my kiddos did very well to my surprise, and the music was indeed fantastic.

I have seen folks come early, set up a portable shade & then as the gig is about to start, take it down. I guess it would depend on how many you bring & whether or not someone minds lugging it.

Can someone give me a brief breakdown of Blues on the Green? Clearly I have the wrong info, b/c this thread has bottled my mind. I'm looking for free/cheap things to do instead of just going out to drink all the time.

This is at Zilker where the kite festival is, correct? Where can I find a lineup?

Here's the info
Blues on the Green

Yes, it's free... they use Rock Island as the stage backdrop... where the Austin Ventures stage was for ACL.

For the most part you just walk up, put down a blanket, chair, or nothing, and enjoy the show. Plenty of people bring their dogs, families, etc.

Last night was great... especially since the weather & temperature were nice... especially with the breeze. It wasn't hot at all.

Here's the lineup cut/paste from their website...

6-13: RUTHIE FOSTER & BAND

6-27: IAN MCLAGAN AND THE BUMP BAND

7-11: STORYVILLE

7-25: CYRIL NEVILLE & TRIBE 13

8-08: JIMMY REED HIGHWAY

8-22: MARCIA BALL & BAND

Thanks for the info KS. Sounds like a good time. Think I'll have to load up the camping chairs, my roommate's dog and a 6 pack and head out there.
