I'm planning a weekend get away with the family. I have two kids(4 and 6 years).
What are some must see places, eateries, etc.? We were thinking NASA.
Any other suggestions for anything would be great.
NASA (Space Center Houston) would be a good place to start. Kemah Boardwalk is just about completely rebuilt and is a fun place for kiddies as well as good places to eat.
Galveston is about 30 min from NASA, and has made a remarkable recovery from Hurricane Ike. Some wonderful seafood restaurants, beaches, etc.
Oh, yeah, almost forgot. Moody Gardens in Galveston makes for a nice day trip. Lots to see and do (botanical gardens, 3-D IMAX, etc).
The Science and Natural History Museum is great for kids -- lots of interactive exhibits, good dinosaur exhibit, etc. They also have a really neat butterfly exhibit -- it's a large conical greenhouse with all types of butterflies flying around. The Museum also has an IMAX and a planetarium
The recently renovated and expanded Children's Museum is near the above mentioned Natural History Museum. Your kids would enjoy it. The Houston Zoo and Hermann Park are really nice as well...lots of shade which comes in handy this time of year. And check out the new train that circles the park...your kids would like that too. Discovery Green in downtown Houston is another new park that has a few "splash" areas. If the Astros are in town, you could always go see a game a Minute Maid Park
Sorry, Murphy, but unless I slept through the sale, Drayton McLane still owns the team, which makes it impossible to watch and less likely to win. There are some quality people on that roster, and I do feel sorry for them. They are not like you or me, who can leave a boss we don't like and get another job. MLB has them tied there and the citizens of Houston saddled with that $350 million debt service on "Wino World", aka, Enron Field - a certain poetic justice that McLane's new baseball park was named after Enron.
