the "lowest" i'd like to go would be a hampton inn type thing. hilton--those are nice and i do have those hilton rewards points. but what are some other nice hotels in h-town?

downtown or galleria areas or somewhere in between. give me a hotel in conroe and i'll cut you.

I don't know Houston very well, but a few years ago, we stayed here for 2 nights and liked it quite a bit:

The Lancaster

We were in town to see the Cardinals, and the hotel had a package deal with the Astros for 50% off tickets.

Three hotels I would recommend from personal experience.

Hotel Icon is fantastic - this would be my first choice -The Link
We're staying at the Alden in a month. Nice bar/restaurant, too -The Link
Hotel Derek is near the Galleria - good modern hotel - excellent dining/bar -The Link

capitan's list is good.

throw in the intercontinental in the galliera if you want.

i'd stay at the icon if you are looking for swank.

There is a Westin attached to the Galleria that would fit the bill for ya. Not as nice as Icon or some others, but certainly clean and an excellent location. probably a heck of a lot cheaper than those others listed, too.

Others in the Galleria:
JW Marriott -- across the street from the Galleria
Omni -- Wooday just outside 610
Granduca -- all suites, brand new, across from Uptown Park
Hilton - Post Oak (formerly the Doubletree)

I've stayed at both the Hotel Icon and The Magnolia in the past few months. Both are exactly what you are looking for. I haven't stayed at Alden, but I have seen the rooms. I'd go for one of those three. Houstonian is nice, but dated. Derek is too damn cheezy. There is going to be a new Hotel ZaZa in the old Warwick hotel like in Dallas, but I'm not sure when it opens. There is also a new hotel with and Italian name in Uptown Park on Post Oak, but I'm not sure of the name.

lancaster or four seasons, those are the two I use and I always enjoy my stay. lancaster is a boutique hotel, the four seasons is well, the four seasons.

The Four Seasons downtown is excellent. The hotel is an unassuming building from the outside, but is up to Four Seasons standards on the inside. Within walking distance of Minutemaid and Toyota Center. Have complimentary Town car service anywhere downtown (great for clubbing, they'll drop you off and pick you up). The beauty of it is since they are mainly a business hotel, they offer really nice rates for the weekend - sometimes two nights for the price of one. Outstanding exercise facility with steam sauna too.

The Hilton Americas is outstanding and Icon is a pretty cool stay as well. But if you're willing to settle for a Hampton Inn, then you're pretty much in good shape picking any Galleria area hotel at random (with the exception of that rather drab looking Courtyard on the northbound West Loop feeder.

So in review... You want DT, then the Icon and Hilton Americas are my best two suggestiions.

Uptown/Galleria... take your pick but if I had to choose one, I'd go with the JW Marriot or Westin Galleria.

It's too bad the Crown Plaza in the Med Center closed down... otherwise, that'd be a nice, convenient option, too.

I usually stay at the Intercontinental near the Galleria or the Renaissance Hotel next door to the old Summit (now Osteen's church) on 59. Both very nice, both very near the Galleria.

This sounds like a job for Priceline or Hotwire. Hotwire lists a 3 star in the Galleria for $68 a night. That might be hard to beat.

Hotwire is THE BEST place to get a hotel room, especially during off peak times like weekends in Houston. I have used Hotwire MANY times. Three stars on Hotwire can be hit or miss. Four stars and higher will be plenty nice.

3 stars in the Galleria = The Drury Inn (next door to the Hampton) or maybe Extended Stay America (across from the Derek).

3.5 stars = Hampton or Courtyard by Marriott. Maybe the Marriott West Loop.

4 stars = Omni, Guest Quarters, Intercontinental, Derek, JW Marriott, Hilton Post Oak --- I'd be disappointed if they stuck me in the Marriott West Loop at 4 stars.

4.5 stars = St. Regis

5 stars = Granducca (even this may be 4.5)

Agreed on Hotwire/Priceline as long as you pick the highest available quality or rating. I got a room at the Hilton Americas downtown on New Years Eve for about $75 off of Priceline Name Your Price this year.

Hilton - Americas or Inn at the Ballpark. I've stayed at both multiple times and enjoyed them both. I would highly recommend Priceline. I have on several occasions gotten a downtown 4* for $50-60 (at least 2 times at the Hilton-Americas and 1 at the Hyatt which is also nice). The most I have paid is $75, but of course it depends on what is going on in town.

If you priceline it, make sure you call the hotel a day or two later and specify non-smoking (if that is your preference), or you might have an issue at check-in.

I use Priceline anytime I'm sure I won't need to back out of the trip and I always go with 5 Star or 4 Star hotels to be on the safe side. Some of the 3 Star and down stuff can get a little sketchy.

As for Houston hotels, I vouch for the Inn at the Ballpark. Very cool baseball theme. Very manly decor, but chicks seem to dig it too. Large comfortable rooms. Stayed at the Lancaster last week and it was ok. Older hotel, rooms of widely varying sizes, beds comfortable but furniture getting pretty worn. Overpriced at $200 plus, but if you can find it in the vicinity of $100/night it would be fine.
