Houston hotels

Will be in Houston for a meeting. Taking the wife and 3 boys down with me (driving). Recommend a hotel either within walking distance to the convention center or within walking distance to something for the family (mall, museum, etc.) Would prefer for the hotel room to be spacious (big enough for 5), have a nice pool. Need to stay around ~$150/nt. If you cannot think of a particular hotel, any input on area I should be looking at would be helpful and i'll do the legwork for the hotel. The area around the convention center looks to be either booked or expensive, so family area is probably the better option.

Thanks in advance hornsfans

Probably might want to stay near the Galleria area - should be plenty of options there and you might be able to use Priceline.

The zoo is always great for kids and Hermann Park + museums are right there but the closest hotel is ZaZa - won't meet your price point and I wouldn't exactly call it kid friendly.

I would stay near the Galleria - tons of options in that area.

the hilton americas is really nice, its not in a family friendly area but you can take the train (its about 3-4 blocks away).

use hotwire.

hilton americas connects to the convention center. it is also right next to the new discovery green park so it is very much in a family area now. it can be had for cheap through one of the hotel websites. the four seasons and the inn at the ballpark are the next 2 closest hotels to george r. brown.

As stated above, any of the hotels near the convention center are, of course, downtown, and that isn't, IMO, the best "family" place to stay.

I would also look at the Galleria area. The Westin is actually attached to the Galleria. There's plenty of shopping and an ice skating rink. Although it would require car transportation to get to the Zoo or museums, they aren't too far away, and are all pretty easy to get to.

My experience is that the best way to do it is to use Priceline, and enter a 4-star $90 or $100 per night in the Galleria area. Last time I did that, we got the Hilton on Post Oak (not the Americas mentioned above). It was very nice, and well-located.

Good luck.

As for places to eat.........that's for a whole other thread.

If you have to have walking distance to the Convention center, Hilton Americas, magnolia, Inn at The Ball Park.
Galleria is driving distance to the Convention center.

Appreciate all the replies.

Any experience with taking the "light rail" to the convention center?

I wanted to try the Priceline "name your own price" option but I need to specify a room for 5 and I can't find that. Maybe i'll give them a call.

Thanks

If you're staying at Hilton Americas or other hotel near the convention center you are close to Discovery Green park and a short rail ride to Hermann Park.

you should simply put the capacity at 4 people. Most hotels cannot provide a rollaway bed in rooms with two queens because it is a fire hazard. there are exceptions, but difficult to find and book online.

you might consider something like the marriot residence inn, which they have one right next to the hilton americas. you can easily fit 5 in there and get a $150. i have stayed that hilton. it is nice, new, and big. pool area is nice, but there is no sun there it is covered.... but outdoors.

FYI - you can't take the light rail from the Galleria to GRB. It only (as of now) runs north and south from downtown to Reliant Stadium.
