Houston Farmers Markets

I originally posted this in a response to another thread but decided to post it as its own thread to spread the word about some farmers markets that I've been to lately that have some quality products. There are a couple of microgreen farmers who sell great stuff (they also sell the same stuff to some of the nicer restaurants). This list doesn't include the big farmers market on Airline and is limited to a few relatively newer ones inside the loop (although the last one has locations in Clear Lake and in West Houston).

There's one on Saturdays at Onion Creek in the Heights (White Oak between Studewood and Heights Blvd.) and on Tuesday evenings at Christ the King in the Village (Rice Blvd at Greenbriar) The Link

There's the MIdtown farmers market at T'afia (Travis @ Alabama): The Link

Finally, there is the Central City Co-Op farmers market at 2115 Taft (between Fairview and W. Gray) in Montrose (they also have other locations). The Link

Yup..the one in Sunset Valley at the Tony Berger Center rocks. They have all kinds of stuff.
Natural pork...mmmm....poooork.

I've been pretty undrewhelmed by any of the true farmer's markets in Houston. The picking are pretty slim and they're all quite a drive.

For me, the drive to Canino's on Airline is worth the trip and I've made it fairly recently. My favorite part is in the back where the small vendors are. There's an herb stall that's worth the trip all alone. The last time there, I got Mexican Oregano, Cascabel Chili Powder, Epazote, Dried Hibiscus, (Jamaica Flowers), and Cumin. In the past, I've gotten raw cacao beans and fresh made mole sauce.

Much closer to home is Sandy's Market on I-10 and Tully near Stratford HS. Also not a real farmer's market, but consistently the best, (and cheapest), produce in the area.

They are also serving a huge buffet now from breakfast through dinner. It's extremely popular with the rabbit food
crowd, but is slightly unsettling at first to be grocery shopping among tables of people eating.
