Houston Energy Companies

My mom's two year contract with Reliant is running out this/next month and they are asking for 19 cents (it had been 14 cents). Has anyone had good experiences/prices with any of the other energy companies that service the area?

Thanks.

Thanks for the advice.

According to the Houston website, the cheapest we can get is 15.9 from Star Tex, but that's only if we sign on for 3 years. Do you think it's a good idea to sign on for a 3 year term with this company? (will they go under, will prices go down, etc.)

in january, i moved into a new rental home and found the cheapest provider out there - riverway power. it was like 10.9 cents. it was great for 5 months. then last month i got an email from them saying that they had filed for bankruptcy protection and were not going to reorganize, so as of that day i was going to be switched to the "provider of last resort" which in houston is reliant. reliant sent me a notice asking for a $520 deposit and were charging me 20 cents per hour. the day of the notice from riverway i called txu and went with them as i had them in dallas in in houston up until my move in january. their prices had gone up to 16 cents per hour by that time ( i was paying around 13.5 previously with them) but that's still better than what reliant was asking.

long story short, go with a large, established provider only as these smaller, undercapitalized ones are going OOB when rates spike. and know that reliant is one of the highest priced providers in houston based on my shopping.

i don't know how large or well funded gexa, amigo, or some of these other companies are.
