houston eateries

Hello all,

I recently relocated to Montrose (right behind Hugo's) and I am rather ignorant of all the fine food choices that are relatively close. actually, I'm rather ignorant to many of houston's best restaurants as I've lived in Austin or the Houston burbs for the past 20 years.

I've read several posts in the last several months about all sorts of good spots inside of the loop. I am completing some graduate studies...so I'm not looking for places that are dirt cheap, but I also can't afford to eat great every night.

recommendations and favorites would be greatly appreciated. there is very little cuisine I don't appreciate.

thanks y'all.

ive never been to hugo's. houston has some great stuff. for starters, within one mile of your location, i can recommend:

breakfast: baby barnaby's (make sure you get the chicken apple sausage. also their potatoes are good. you can watch a machine squeeze your oj fresh from oranges

mexican: cafe adobe. shrimp bravo is excellent (bacon wrapped grilled shrimp w/ bbq sauce), but they do the same thing with chicken and its even better, although its not on the menu

poboys: BBs. new place, but seriously good. i can vouch for the roast beef, sausage, and shrimp poboys. fries are good too

hole in the wall tex mex: chapultapec. open 24 hours, delicious greasy tex mex

burgers: lankfords. inconsistent, but on a good day their burgers are in a different world. firehouse burger has minced habaneros diced up in the meat. cfs is tasty too. its the thursday special i believe

sandwiches: hobbit cafe

greek: niko nikos. pretty good gyros. not as good as istanbul deli in rice village though

sushi: zake. decent sushi if you can stand the oontz-oontz atmosphere. calamari/hot sauce appetizer is worth it alone

dessert: empire cafe. go on monday night for half priced cake night. they are known for their carrot cake, but its nothing really special. the austin cream cake is unlike anything ive ever had.

a place to drink beer that will remind you of austin: west alabama icehouse. on a cool afternoon/night, this place is like heaven

i could go on indefinitely. if you want to specify some types of cuisine, or expand your area, this web page is a good starter:

If you like Italian there's a great restaurant called Sphaghetti Westerns on Durham about three blocks south of I-10. The food is very good, the portions are ample, and it's very reasonably priced. For a more expensive Italian meal try Petronella's on Jackson Hill. Really, really good.

For Mexican I can't think of a place that is more over-rated than Cafe Adobe. I think they write their own reviews. The best Margarita in Houston? Not even in the top 75% in my view.

Cyclone Anaya's is better, by far.

I think Cafe Adobe is disgusting.

Cool Places in Houston

My favorite spots, I also live on Montrose near Washington.

Barnaby's on Grey- broad menu of burgers, salads, and chicken entrees'.
Katz on Westheimer- Just like the Austin Katz's
Star Pizza on Washington- Awesome
Candellaris on Washington and Westcott- pizza/italian.even more awesome
Beavers on Sawyer (taylor?) and Washington- Good happy hour venue, great food.
Taqueria Laredo on Washington- Breakfast tacos
El ray on Washington- Good greasy mexican food
El Tiempo on Washington- The cities best mexican, if you ask me.
Mings Cafe on Montross- great chinese..
Blue fish on Richmond- great sushi

You probably need to know where the memorial park jogging trail is too so you can shed off the pounds from all of the great food in the area. I am not even half way through with my list.

Segari's is awesome, best seafood in the city but Mandola's on west gray is one of my favorites as well.

I envy you if you live right behind Hugo's, one of my favorite spots

Cafe Revele in the village is great

you live right down the street from Mark's, at one time one of my favorite restaurants in the country but i recently had a bad experience.

the fact that someone would pick katz as a good place to eat is a disgrace;

nino's has great italian but you can hit the original carraba's on kirby, very good.

niko nikko's for greek, barnaby's, ruggles cafe, west gray cafe, hungry's, all great casual eats.

for chinese i do like kam's on montrose, Mo Mong is right by you as well,

michaelangelo's in another good italian spot, damien's...

i actually like fish in midtown but i hate most places in midtown, there are a lot of good sushi places;

Tila's mexican, laredo taqueria for breakfast taco's, there are so many good restaurants in houston it is rediculous,

shade, the glass wall, gravitas, unfortunately, i cant always eat at them all.

Forgot to tell you a great burger place. Christian's Tailgate. Washington and I-10. NE corner next to TxDot and Denny's. It's a hole-in-the-wall dive but great burgers and beer. Recently updated to a higher class of hole-ion-the-wall dive.

Maybe I'm blind but did I really miss Dolce Vita on here? For a nice meal, you can walk across the street from Dolce Vita to So Vino. I know the chef - excellent food and reasonable wine prices.

We tried the soft shells at Pico's Mex Mex last Sunday and they were delicious. But beware, a plate of 3 of them with rice and salad will run you $30.

not previously listed;

Danton's seafood at Montrose and 59. Top notch gumbo, fried shrimp and oysters.

Onion Creek in the Heights is good casual fare (only been twice)

Max's Wine Dive on Washington - kinda different place, not sure how to describe it, but I liked it.

Mockingbird Bistro is good, but it ain't cheap, not too far from you I don't think.

bularry, the country *** reuben at onion creek is one of my favorite sandos in town. that and a bucket of high life is a hell of a way to spend an evening once it cools down a bit.

Kenny and Ziggy's on Post Oak- Baked Salmon w/ Bagel & Cream Cheese.

One of the Best Breakfast's in Houston.

Brennan's- Best Brunch in the City.

Speaking of breakfast, Buffalo Grille is always a winner (either location)... don't sweat the line on the weekends. It moves quickly.

Speaking of breakfast grab some now at Avalon Diner on Westheimer before they shut down for good next week. I used to live across the street at Avalon Square Apartments and had many a solid breakfast in that place.

Ragin' Cajun on Richmond has some good grub.

I always forget the name of Onion Creek's "other place". The one with no alochol. Oh yeah, Dry Creek. They have a Triple Bypass Burger with bacon and a fried egg on top that is awesome.

Bernard, Avalon is closing???? WTF, we tried to eat there on Sunday but the line was so long we went to 59 Diner instead. I would have waited if only I had known!!!!
