I've got 2 great places out in the country ( Tony's in Sealy and Sprotsmans in Eagle Lake), but nowhere near home (klein area)

I've heard Mel's, haven't tried them

Stracks-- corn meal in CFS? gravy too heavy
Hickory Hollow-- yellow gravy? not so much
59 diner-- pretty decent

any suggestions?

Is Goodson's on 249? someone was trying to tell me where it was the other day

Yes. It's about a mile South of the Tomball intersection on the left. West side of 249. It's good, but too far from southwest Houston.

i dont know if they atill have it but west gray cafe on west gray near taft usedto have great chicken fried steak.

we have had several threads on CFS here on Rusty's lately, and many have had to do with the best restaurant CFSs. Rusty's is not really for restaurant discussions, but that isn't what bothers me about these threads. What bothers me is that CFS can ALWAYS be done better at home than at a restaurant. Just about every home made CFS I have ever had, I would put over just about ANY restaurant CFS I have ever had.
For those of you who are discussing the best restaurant CFSs, have you ever made your own?

I would also add the Pappy's out on I-10 has a very good CFS. The one at Hickory Hollow is a BIG CFS, but IMO is not a GOOD CFs.

I've never tried the CFS at Pappy's despite frequently lunching there. On Wednesdays, their lunch special is a blackened catfish with crawfish etouffee that's as good as any I've ever had, (which means: rich and buttery and a cardiologist's worst nightmare). They also occasionally have a crawfish bisque that's pretty tasty.

The CFS at The Mason Jar, about fifty yards, past Pappy's is pretty good, too. They serve a lunch portion and a CFS sammich also.

THEU---My desire for comfort food goes up this time of year and my desire to cook goes down

Another vote for Goodson Cafes CFS.

It is one of the best in the entire state. The only CFS that is better is in Strawn at Mary's and Jake & Dorothys in Stephenville.
