Houston: Cable vs. DSL

More specifically in the Med Center area...

But...

My brother lives there and he had cable internet through Time Warner for about 3 years and had trouble with it on and off. Finally a few months back it went out and they "fixed it" only to have it go out again and leave him without internet for over a wbeek, so he cancelled and switched to DSL.

His DSL has seemed to work OK so far, and he gets good connection speeds (I think there's a station relatively near the med center area so that helps b/c DSL speeds are dependent on how far you are from the source).

I will be living in the same complex as him and am wondering now if I should go with Time Warner cable or with the SBC DSL that he has. Time Warner has been fine for me in the past (but in El Paso and Austin), so I want some feedback on what other people have experienced in Houston with their high speed providers.

Its a confusing issue...I live in The Woodlands and my Time Warner cable never goes out...I've had zero problems. My best friend has SBC DSL and he's dumping it...nothing but trouble.

I live in the Bellaire/Meyerland area and have SBC DSL. I have had it about a year and a half and it's been great. I'm pretty close to a station as well, so my connection speed has always been excellent. In the time I've had it I've never had a problem connecting.

We use TW for cable TV, and just that always seems to be ****** up (IControl and Pay Per View maybe work half the time (rarely at night during prime time), some channels go in and out, the guide is excruciatingly slow to load, etc). Several buddies have TW for cable internet and TV and they love it. They live in Katy and Sugarland, so it seems like TW just has a lot more bandwidth available in the suburbs.

for what it is worth I'm in the Heights/Memorial Park area and have great connection with TWC/Earthlink cable... but then I use SBCDSL for the office which is in the Montrose/Westheimer area..

Either one is going to be good for you and both will carry their problems. I've had only two issues with my SWBell DSL over the 4 years I've had it and I'm in the Med Ctr. My parents have Time Warner and haven't had one problem with it in the last year. I have some friends who swear by DSL and others who swear by cable. Anyone who tells you that one sucks over the other doesn't really know what they're talking about. Each carry problems and each can be bullet proof. I'll never switch from DSL but if you get cable and it works for you I would stay with it.
