houston area electricity rates

Hey V4,
10+cents is pretty good but I noticed on all the plans that rate can be changed. How long have you been with them?

V4 - I don't wanna crap on your post - and I will say I do not know anything about Champion Energy.

But a couple years ago, I went with the cheapest rate I could find on the power to choose page. 9.5 cents for 12 months fixed with a company called Greenspoint Energy here in Houston. At that time there were 30-40 companies to choose from. I just picked the cheapest and thought not much about it.

Lo and behold, Greenspoint went belly up 3 months later and I was automatically assigned to an interim Provider (not my choice but chosen by some agency). I was with this interim Provider for 8 days and they charged me 25 cents a kw during this time while I switched to a reputable provider. I refused to pay the bill they sent me because it was a screw job at 25 cents. They take advantage of you in this situation.

Nonetheless, I do not know how long your company has been in business or even if you're a "virtual provider" of electricity. I do know I am only interested in choosing a provider that has been around for some length of time and actually has some concrete under them. Otherwise, the chance of being assigned to another interim provider is not one I want to take again.

Champion Energy may be a good one - but that's my experience with just picking the cheapest rate from a company that is only an office-only provider.

Cirro in DFW area has been good. I did a 12 month deal and just re-upped again in May for another 12 months. just under .10 cents per kw and no monthly fee. of course that is for dfw area.

I have been with Champion for two years and they arent a new startup company..I am in the natural gas trading business and know the group they use to hedge their power prices....they arent going anywhere

as for the rates, I always choose the one year fixed rate deal..when I resigned in april, I got in at 9.2 base rate which is 9.6 with taxes etc added.....they are a legit company and have straight forward billing. A+++ from my experience

saw this...UT has joined forces with champion

DALLAS -- The University of Texas Men's & Women's Athletics programs today announced a landmark sponsorship program with Dallas-based Branded Retail Energy Company to create Texas Longhorns Energy (TLE). TLE, to be powered by one of the nation's top retail electricity providers, Champion Energy Services, will provide 100 percent renewable energy to alumni and fans in deregulated regions of Texas. Each new customer account will generate funds for sustainability initiatives for UT and UT Athletics.

The new service will be officially launched mid-August. While final rates will be announced at that time, costs are expected to be in line with other renewable electricity rates currently in the market. Branded Retail Energy first approached UT with the concept through IMG College, the multimedia and sponsorship sales partner for UT Athletics. BRE presented the industry's first affinity marketing platform designed to activate alumni and sports fans' passion for the Longhorns. TLE will exclusively utilize the UT brand and marketing resources available through IMG College's contract with UT Athletics, which will result in cost-savings that would typically be spent on traditional marketing efforts. Those cost savings will help generate funding back to UT Athletics and the University.

"This truly is a revolutionary approach to energy marketing," said UT men's athletics director DeLoss Dodds. "Not only will Texas Longhorns Energy be powered through renewable green energy, but the University will receive credit and funding for each customer who joins. This revenue will help continue UT Athletics and University efforts and programs in sustainability, recycling and energy conservation."

Electricity has been deregulated in the state of Texas since 2002, providing residents and businesses in most areas of the state a choice of energy providers. While many energy companies spend millions of dollars on advertising and marketing, the success of Texas Longhorns Energy will be driven by UT's tremendous alumni and fan base and built-in marketing channels to communicate the benefits of membership to specific target customers.

Texas Longhorns Energy supports the mission of The University of Texas to educate the campus at large on conservation and sustainability initiatives. TLE plans to utilize the strength of outreach allowed by web portals and event-based activities to educate consumers on energy conservation and green power options and to assist with fund-raising in support of specific program initiatives. The University of Texas is dedicated to improving the long-term quality and regenerative capacity of the environmental, social and economic systems that support the University.

"As a graduate of The University of Texas Red McCombs School of Business and as CEO of Champion Energy, I am honored to be in a leadership position to help bring this first-of-its kind program to university supporters," said Scott Fordham, president and CEO of Champion Energy Services. "I've been a 30-year supporter of the school, am on the Longhorn Foundation Advisory Council, and have been a life-long orangeblood. It's truly exciting to be part of this unique opportunity that benefits the school and its fans via a product that consumers need and use every day."

TLE will work with IMG College to develop unique opportunities and provide incentives for the company to use in marketing its services to UT fans. Customers who sign up to utilize TLE will receive a variety of consumer benefits designed to fuel their passion for the Longhorns. In addition, consumers living in regulated communities also will have an opportunity to support the University through TLE, with details being announced at the official launch in August.

"This branded energy venture is a new and exciting opportunity for the college market, and we are pleased to assist The University of Texas Athletics Department again show why they are a leader in college sports," stated Lawton Logan, senior vice president of collegiate properties, IMG College. "This program will give UT sports fans a unique way to integrate their passion for the Longhorns into their daily lives."

rates are kind of like mortgage rates, I guess, they've never been lower, at least to my knowledge. I just researched Kinetic Energy, in the Dallas area, the 12 month fixed actual energy charge is 8.26!

After they add in the monthly fees, they estimate 2000kwh usage will average 8.7.

It does go up for 18 months to 8.80, 24 months also 8.80. I asked the guy if they give longer than 24 months and they don't.

I'm thinking about changing again. My contract with Startexpower ends on Saturday, and I've already switched twice. First I went with Reliant, then rates dipped, and I went with Cirro. Cirro has me at 9.16 for 18 months, $50 credit on first bill.

So, I guess I'm actually at a standoff, or pretty close, 9.16 compared to 8.80, considering the $50?

We probably average 2500 kwh a month, due to two cold months and 3 hot months.

I still can't believe we're talking low 8s!!

You should get a credit Vince as I just switched. Seemed pretty seamless. Got last billing from Reliant and called Champion just to verify. They said started on the correct date so we'll see. Was 3.5 cents less than Reliant so should be very noticeable.
The person that called from Reliant to 'save' the business was polite and not at all pushy - I was surprised and pleased. If she could have matched the rate I would have stayed but did not make any efforts to do so.
If I have any negative experience in the change over I'll post.
Hookem - I am ready for some football!

sweet glad to hear it....it should go smooth, I have been with champion for 2 years with no problems...if you change in the middle of a billing cycle i think you can pay an extra 5 bucks to switch then and not wait

anybody know who the one is that gives you continental miles for every dollar you spend? heard somebody talking about it on radio, but don't know who it is. Continental miles for every dollar, and then continental miles for paying it with my continental world plus card. Double miles
