House Park Barbecue

I can't believe that before this week I'd never managed to try the barbecue at House Park Barbecue on West 12th (over by the Tavern). But I've made amends.

I just had lunch here for the 2nd time in a week. It is good stuff, probably the best barbecue in Austin proper now that Muellers is closed down. I never got the chance to eat there before this week because they are only open 11-2:30, and I always seemed to get there later. But now I work just down the street and I have no excuse.

Brisket is very good, tender with a great flavor. Their sausage is great, I'm not usually a fan of sausage at most barbecue joints, but I actually enjoyed theirs. And their chopped barbecue is good as well. Their sides are nothing to write home about, but they are palatable - but i don't go to a barbecue joint for the sides. They also sell pork loin, but I'll have to try that next week and report back.

The only downsides are the short operating hours and the fact that they only take cash, but if you work downtown it's not too much of a hassle. Plus, you get to go back to work smelling like smoke, which is always a plus.

house park is solid. i second ed's recc on the pork loin. i think its their best dish, but their brisket is also really good. it is a supersmokey place. i cant eat there if i'm going to court or a meeting in the afternoon, for sure.

Went again today and it was great again. I tried the pork loin, it was indeed very good, but mine I make at home is better (that's not trying to put theirs down, I've honestly never had a better smoked pork loin than what I've smoked at my house). I'll be sticking to the brisket/sausage/chopped in the future.

I had lunch today, brisket and sausage, very good and cheap.

A ton of food and an iced tea for under $9.

What is the history of this place?

How long has it been here?

I always noticed, but never gave it a shot.

Went today as well. I was not blown away but was impressed. It will do for a bbq fix in the city but still not replace my lust for Cooper's all the way out in Llano. The price is great, portion size perfect.

The only thing bad was some tool talking about how the last time he lived in Austin he got tired of bbq and that it is not that big a deal. That did not sit well with me but I stayed quiet. Doosh.

I always eat there when I have a weekday off from work. Been going about five or six times a year for the last two years and have always found it consistently good.

I went again today for lunch, pork loin and brisket with cole slaw, potato salad, beans, and ice tea for $9.00.

It was quite good.

You know Huff, I have friends how claim to have gone on an off day, I am waiting for such a day.

So far, so good though.

ok, just got back

Overall, certainly a much better experience than I've had in the past.

Had the mixed plate with sausage, brisket, coleslaw, potato salad and beans

I liked the beans. Had a hint of Ranch Style Beans you get at HEB (which I like), but I assume they are homemade

sauce had a decent heat to it, more on the sweeter side.

Potato salad was outstanding

Sausage had an average taste, didn't blow me away

Brisket was a tad on dry side, but overall did the trick.

Considering Bert's is still closed I would consider this as a suitable replacement. I don't think Bert's is close to being the best in town, however I love it for various reasons. I would say House Park would adequately fill the void for the time being.

I just discovered I have an acquaintance whose dad owns this place... he said he will hook me up if I come in so I'm going to have to try it out...

Had House today for the 1st time (yes, I've been here 12 years... but @ least I'm trying to hit all the good spots vs. the teeming masses who think Chili's or Applebee's is going exotic).

Took the suggestion & got the pork loin as part of a 2 meat plate; gotta tell them sauce on the side (or not @ all) because they hit it before you notice. Had Big Red as the go with & it was allsome.

let me know when y'all go. Good spot.

If you miss Bert's, btw, go to the Far West location.

Probably too late of a response, but we're meeting around noon. Don't know how you'll find us if you go but the restaurant is pretty small, I'm wearing a brown button down shirt, and my name is Ian.
